NOFX - War on Errorism(2003)

Code: Select all

War on Errorism, NOFX's umpteenth collection of snide skatecore, is a half-great collection of the bratty double-time anthems dominated by Fat Mike's snotty, sarcastic vocals. But while the album bristles with broad political criticism, it also lays out rhetoric that seems to present an isolationist punk rock policy of its own. Included with War on Errorism is the trailer for Unprecedented, a documentary that traces the bizarre events of the 2000 presidential election. This is accompanied by a handwritten op-ed piece by Fat Mike, Smelly, El Hefe, and Melvin, in which the band does a little consciousness raising around the vert ramp. "The U.S. is now the butt of a worldwide joke," they write, in reference to the election hullabaloo. "All everyone keeps saying is 'get over it' or 'that was so two years ago.' Well, we're not getting over it and neither should you." Musically, NOFX fuses its political cynicism with criticism of punk rock itself, and suggests that the best thing for all the kids and the bands might be to close ranks and start their own little hardcore community. "Irrationality of Rationality" and "Franco Un-American" — two of the album's most melodic, catchy songs — are also two of War on Errorism's most biting commentaries. The first personalizes the trickle-down effect of corporate decision-making over a lockstep hardcore rhythm; the second gets all new wavy as Fat Mike reasons out his own world view, and somehow rhymes "apathy" with "Noam Chomsky."

While NOFX makes its politics clear throughout the album, it also has ideas and questions about its own scene. "Separation of Church and Skate" wonders about the homogeny of punk in the 21st century, and the loss of danger in rock & roll. Later, "Mattersville" presents the blueprint for a California hardcore retirement community, a neighborhood of punks, where the cops can't come in and there's always beer and cheese. It's a fantasy, an update of Screeching Weasel's "Punkhouse." But it might also be a reaction to the heady subjects bandied about in War on Errorism's activist moments. In a subdivision surrounded by bands, punks, and skaters, no one would have to worry about bombs, evildoers, and those who put the "mock" back in "democracy" (from the seething "Re-gaining Unconsciousness"). War on Errorism is long on rhetoric, but it still fires off a few uncontrolled bursts of NOFX humor. "She's Nubs" is a crass yet sadly hilarious tribute to a handicapped fan; "Medio-core" channels the Dead Milkmen as it rips on rock & roll's ongoing regurgitation. The songs don't exactly jibe with War on Errorism's more serious sections. But if NOFX suddenly became all serious, America might really have a problem on its hands.

Roni Size - In the Mode (2000)

Code: Select all

With more big-time backing than any junglist save toothy Goldie, the Roni Size all-stars return with a punchy suite of material that sounds so crossed over it could snap. The big-beat drums continue to push drum & bass toward soulful house; the vocals by MC Dynamite as well as guests Method Man and Zach de la Rocha continue to demand hip-hop respect; and the form is repeated, again and again, over and over, at 180 beats per minute. A funky key lick that might bob and weave in an able DJ's hands goes stale quickly over the duration of a long-form CD, but still Size soldiers onward with barely a tempo change. It's mystifying, as he holds so many live wires in his hands. Though the complaint department is firing full force over this seemingly unfinished release, make no mistake that crisp organic jungle standards such as "Ghetto Superstar" will continue to define the name brand, setting dance floors into a kinetic frenzy for many seasons past the shelf date.

Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake It's Morning (25.01.2005)

Code: Select all

Conor Oberst is running on dangerous ground: getting his first Dylan comparisons at 12, frolicking with Winona Ryder, releasing two separate albums at once. Didn't he learn anything from Ryan Adams' mistakes? It's a good thing he can write such haunting, intimate songs. I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning (released simultaneous with Digital Ash In A Digital Urn) is the album the Omaha native has always threatened to make, channeling his country rock influences into articulate, witty ballads that come to life with gorgeous harmonies supplied by Emmylou Harris. The tumbling "We Are Nowhere and It's Now" might be his first klix masterpiece, while the words of album closer "Road To Joy" ("I could've been a famous singer if I had someone else's voice/ But failure's always sounded better") indicate that Oberst might have his head screwed on straight after all.
---
Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst continues to earn his reputation as our most respected young troubadour with almost frightening ease. For the past few years he's been tagged "rock's boy genius" by the music press. These albums are a soundly articulated slice of modern life rolled into two very different records, both bursting with all the heartfelt poetry for which Bright Eyes' records have earned their acclaim. Of course, the rough edges haven't gone away - the palpitation of a splintering note, the crack of a voice as it overextends, the clumsy thump of a misplaced thumb. It's all still there. But there's a glorious new level of depth, a maturation of texture, writing and delivery. His best work yet.
1. At The Bottom Of Everything - (with Jim James)
2. We Are Nowhere And It's Now - (with Emmylou Harris)
3. Old Soul Song (For The New World Order) - (with Emmlou Harris)
4. Lua
5. Train Under Water
6. First Day Of My Life
7. Another Travellin' Song
8. Landlocked Blues - (with Emmylou Harris)
9. Poison Oak
10. Road To Joy

Modern Day Zero - Coming Up for Air (2004)

Code: Select all

The sound you hear when you listen to Modern Day Zero is raw yet refined. You hear a dynamic rock band with a depth too often lacking on today’s airwaves. It is engaging and magnetic. It is the sound of experience, both highs and lows, fueled by passion and desire.

The origins of Modern Day Zero date to 1996 when singer, Scott Gertken; bassist, Rich Criebaum; and drummer, Brian Pearia started a band called Mesh. For the next two years, these founding members of Mesh would travel the world performing for U.S. troops abroad and thousands more here at home. 1998 would see a new dimension and depth added as guitarist, Rock, entered the picture and soon after joined Mesh and producer Malcolm Springer (Full Devil Jacket, Greenwheel, Fear Factory, Sinch) in Memphis for the recording of the EP, 'Ripple Effect'. The resulting EP went on to sell over 10,000 copies while the band would continue to build its fan base, touring the Midwest, performing for tens of thousands.

Never ones to be complacent and wanting to ‘fatten’ their sound, the band enlisted the services of accomplished guitarist, Matt Arana with the results heard on their 2001 CD release ‘lowercase’. The first single “Maybe Tomorrow” hit the Midwest radio airwaves and immediately caused a national reaction. The band started fielding phone calls from numerous record companies, but ended up signing a deal with The Label a new record company that was started by the extremely successful management outfit called The Firm. Under the slight name change, Mesh STL, ‘lowercase’ was quickly remixed by renowned engineer Tom Lord-Alge and the band hit the road as the support act for Puddle Of Mudd. The video for “Maybe Tomorrow” became a staple on the MTV2 playlist and rose into the Top 20 on both the Modern and Active Rock charts. The band went on to share the stage with many bands including Nickelback, Saliva, Default and Tantric. Politics, economics and the other various idiosyncracies of the record industry resulted in The Firm’s record label folding and closing shop.

Fast forward to 2004. Regrouped and steadfast, a smarter, better band has gone back to its studio and produced ‘Coming Up for Air’. A year and a half in the making. Featuring blistering tracks such as the first single “Sick Inside” and “Down” (featured on EA Sports’ NHL 2004 and NASCAR 2004 games), to the sparse yet profound “Concentrate” and the earnest and engaging “Smother Me”. A band no longer suffocating, but breathing new life. A band reborn fathers an album not just worthy of your attention… commanding it.

Freq Nasty - Bring Me the Head of Freq Nasty (2004)

Code: Select all

It’s the Freq-in’ weekend, baby we’re about to have us some fun. New Zealand ex-pat Darin Mcfadyen - Freq Nasty to anyone who’s felt the width of his basslines on dancefloors around the world - knows well that the shifting patterns of culture mean fun by the ton in 2004.
Bring Me The Head of Freq Nasty, is his first album for Brighton’s Skint Records and the second of his career. For the last twelve years, he’s been tinkering with the back end of rave culture and carving aural geometry out of uncut basslines and diamond-tipped breakbeats. In 1991 he arrived in Britain with a one-way ticket and immersed himself into the raging elementalism of the drum & bass scene, and emerged, dazed and enthused, as Freq Nasty.

An alumni of the seminal SOUR and Motiv labels, Freq Nasty rapidly established himself as one of the breakbeat scene’s pioneers, producing instant classic after instant classic with studio partner BLIM. As breakbeat flourished into its own, Freq Nasty’s tunes remained ahead of the pack. His remix of Steve Reich’s ‘Desert Music’ became breakbeat’s own ‘Inner City Life’ or ‘Energy Flash’: emblematic signature tunes of an emerging scene. Since then the likes of Fatboy Slim, Kelis and KRS-One have all felt the benefit of a Freq Nasty re-rub. Bring Me The Head Of Freq Nasty is the result of a long hibernation in his studio. What resulted is about as far from generic clockwork breaks as Brixton is from Brisbane, reflecting the genetic stew of urban music today: bashment, breaks, hip hop, drum & bass and garage.

MU - Afro Finger And Gel (2003)

Code: Select all

Genre: Electronic
Style: House
Notes: written by Mutsumi Kanamori & Maurice Fulton
produced & arranged by Maurice Fulton
"An Original Dr. Scratch Mix"
---
Barking electro from Maurice Fulton and his wife, Mu, a Japanese ex-pat who relocated to (of all places) Sheffield, UK. Where "Why I Left" and "Let's Get Sick" are tailor-made dancefloor killers, "My Name Is Tommi" sketches a sordid tale of infidelity and meddling psychoanalysts, while "Hello Bored Biz Man" suspends shrieking cut-up vocals over a hilariously off-key Latin House backing, as a Japanese hostess rails against her smelly, lecherous client. Fulton is on inspired form - the production is tight, infectious and gloriously skewed - but Mu is the real star of the show. Her deliberately affected English vocals get processed, ground up and spat all over the place, but the source material itself is solid gold - who else could make the couplet "I want to tell you something / Open your ears really big" work as well as it does here?

04 Hello Bored Biz Man

The Zombies were perhaps the most British-sounding of all British Invasion groups, and yet they never scored a hit record in their native U.K. The band released three great singles over here, including the wonderful "Time of the Season," which concludes this 1968 masterpiece, frequently called Britain's version of Pet Sounds. This 30th anniversary edition presents both the stereo and mono versions (and there are substantial differences) of the melancholic, keyboard-dominated pop that flowed from Rod Argent and bassist Chris White. The Zombies' main songwriters explored "psychedelic" themes from odd angles. Here songs address a letter to a girlfriend in jail ("Care of Cell 44") and war ("Butcher's Tale"). There's even a "flowers-in-their-hair" hippie anthem (the gorgeous "Hung Up on a Dream"). Totally of its time, and, nevertheless, a timeless classic.

Adam Green is a funny one. He sings about Jessica Simpson and thinks it's hard to be a girl, but he's starstruck by your mom. Green's a charmer, that's for sure, and his second album of poetically quirky songs is amusing in that Tenacious D meets Ben Folds for brunch kind of way. Friends of Mine rides the waves of Jane Scarpantoni's string arrangements, and such a feature allows Green's smart-mouthed lyrics to be a little less jarring, but candid all the same. This is also Green's first album recorded entirely in a studio, and the warmth surrounding Friends of Mine makes that obvious. There's a little tender care sewn throughout, for Green loves his friends and singing for them, too. So if you don't find the love in "The Prince's Bed" and "Frozen in Time," you're a cold sucker. "We're Not Supposed to Be Lovers" reminds you of that childhood crush who didn't like you back and the fantasy of how you'd seek revenge. Green may be a bit dejected, but Friends of Mine is silently laughing. He lets it all come out on the bass-driven rockabilly romp "Salty Candy." Just when you think Green's one of those lovesucker saps who can't see beyond his broken heart, the kid mocks you and mocks you again. Friends of Mine is clever and the child lurking inside will deck the astute adult self taking over, so watch out.

Lemon Jelly - '64-'95 (2005) (zip file 91,7 MB)

Code: Select all

The resurgence of rock in most aspects of popular music has certainly not gone unnoticed by Lemon Jelly's Fred Deakin and Nick Franglen as '64-'95 is littered with epic guitars and explosive refrains nestling amongst the downbeat soul for which they are best known. Opener "Come Down on Me" is tense, fiery, and for the most part dominated by the partnership of crashing power-chords and a lead synth that, while not big-beat, wouldn't sound out of place on an old Lo-Fi's or Chemical Brothers' album. However, for anyone missing the sugary sweetness of Lost Horizons, most of the album is business as usual--strict drum patterns and rolling, mesmeric loops of lush strings, acoustic guitars (that sound great if a little bit cheesy), and lovable bass hooks. Among the deviations in formula are "The Shouty Song," which comes across as some sort of harsh, contemporary jig and "The Slow Train," which utilizes a barber shop quartet to fantastic effect. From start to finish '64-'95 is pretty much devoid of filler and it culminates in the wondrous epic "Go," with the beat poet talents of William Shatner building to a crescendo that'll send anyone home with a smile on their face
---
Introducing '64-'95, the third instalment in Lemon Jelly's rich history of long-players. Breaking away from any (Jelly) mould, Fred Deakin and Nick Franglen have altered the ship's course somewhat and we are treated to '64-'95; their most diverse record yet. Lemon Jelly have made an album entirely based upon unlikely samples swiped from their vast record collections. Not unlike one of their DJ sets, they flip between musical styles at will and make light work of cramming metal, 70s pop, Euro house, R&B, punk and more into just one album. The title, '64-'95, simply signifies the span in years of the various samples they've used and, as ambitious as the whole thing sounds, it works. The list of musical mavericks willingly plundered in the cause of the good ship Jelly includes 70s popsters Gallagher and Lyle, Scottish post-punkers the Scars, US R&B balladeer Monica and none-more-heavy metallers, the Masters of Reality. Each track manages to come as a complete stylistic surprise without losing any flow from one to the next; having said that, it's probably best not to mention the Maori crooner or Captain James T. Kirk for the moment.
1. AKA Come Down on Me
2. AKA Only Time
3. AKA Don't Stop Now
4. AKA Make Things Right
5. AKA the Shouty Track
6. AKA Stay With You
7. AKA the Slow Train
8. AKA a Man Like Me
9. AKA Go
10. *** It Was
11. ***untitled

Mylo - Destroy Rock & Roll (2004)

Code: Select all

With influences ranging from Prince ('Guilty Of Love') through to Daft Punk ('Ottos Journey') and even Scissor Sisters ('Musclecar Reform Reprise'), it's little wonder that The Face described him as 'Scotland's answer to Royksopp'. By refusing to adhere to any one musical style, Mylo may well become one of the most misunderstood artists of his generation, yet despite this, expect this totally absorbing debut to make its mark on the end of year 'best of' listings. Breastfed. 2004.
1. Valley Of The Dolls
2. Sunworshipper
3. Musclecars
4. Drop The Pressure
5. In My Arms
6. Guilty Of Love
7. Paris Four Hundred
8. Destroy Rock & Roll
9. Rikki
10. Otto's Journey
11. Musclecar (Reform Reprise)
12. Zenophile
13. Need You Tonite
