Mull Historical Society's third long player, This Is Hope, is self-descriptive. Colin McIntyre once again demonstrates that he can produce some finely polished tunes. While polished, with high production values, the album appears by no means over produced or soulless. As always, the wit and cleverness of McIntyre's lyrics abound and the quirky melodies run throughout, making for an album that any band wanting to make intelligent and fun pop songs would be proud of.
The groove of "Peculiar" gets the album off to an excellent start. This archetypal pop ditty (it even has "ooh oohs") owes much of its sound to the irony of bands such as Barenaked Ladies, XTC and also Frank Zappa's Cruising with Ruben and the Jets. The near-ballad of "Death of a Scientist" descends into a semi-ELO-esque prog-rock epic but never becomes pretentious. The piano-driven "Your Love, My Gain" is a brilliantly written piece of music, the self-deprecating lyric providing the track with a Ben Folds Five feel. The orchestration and the falsetto harmonies that appear on "Len" draw influence from the classic power ballads of the 60s, something which the likes of Divine Comedy have used to great effect over the last couple of years.

This album is bursting with quality. Mull Historical Society are unafraid to use bold musical arrangements while not obscuring the pure excellence of McIntyre's melodies. The result is a very fresh, clean and honest sound.

BLACK MOTH SUPER RAINBOW - FALLING THROUGH A FIELD (2003)

Black Moth Super Rainbow's approach has worked well. Setting out to produce a record using vintage analog and electronic instruments from the 1970s, their sound leaves one with a warm nostalgia. Perhaps some listeners, like myself, may be reminded of the synthesized soundtracks that accompanied early 80s PBS programming. Everyone has some distant memory that only needs the right combination of Yamaha monos, Korg vocoders, and cat octaves to be reactivated. 
Black Moth Super Rainbow are mostly instrumental, calling to mind the traditions of post-rock, prog-rock, krautrock, and other such concocted movements. While their influences are likely drawn from such periods, as well as more current artists, it is difficult to nestle the band comfortably into any such a category. 

In addition to evoking warm and fuzzy feelings, Falling Through A Field emits a strange vibe. A contradiction between the distant, shadowy melodies and light, earthy sound of the vintage instruments adds an air of mystery, setting this record apart from its contemporaries. The forest imagery artwork on Falling Through A Field is also hard to ignore. Perhaps Black Moth were born and raised in the woods and are descended from the tree-headed beasts which adorn the CD. Judging by the sound of things, it wouldn't surprise me. 

Black Moth Super Rainbow's shortcoming comes from the awkward vocals, which neither generate tension nor work to accentuate the album's pleasant vibe. It's a tendency to add vocals that flattens songs such as "I Think It Is Beautiful That You are 25b Colors Too" with lyrics such as, "I don't want to live through winter/I can't stand to see everything ending". Nevertheless, any way you look at it, Falling Through A Field is a captivating listen. Forest people—nuzzle up and cover yourselves with moths.

Frequently bootlegged and now digitally remastered by Jimmy Page, these tapes capture a 25-month (1969 to 1971) arc in which Zep's sound grew to encompass the speed rush and jazz/blues festival stuff of their 1969 debut, the fully developed folkie musings of "Going to California" (in which Plant vowed to make a hejira right up to Joni Mitchell's front door), and the band's modestly popular multilayered epic "Stairway to Heaven." The Sessions also give a glimpse of nearly off-the-cuff invention in an intense take on Robert Johnson's "Traveling Riverside Blues." Most other white blues musicians would've rushed to get this on vinyl; Page and Plant instead used it for parts, most notably taking its profound acoustic freneticism for Led Zeppelin III.

By far the most unrelievedly aggressive of this seminal D.C. foursome's seven albums, this 1993 collection assembles all the essential elements of Fugazi's aesthetic--strafing melodic tension, dynamic shifts, and unrestrained lyrical fury--and drives them into the psyche with nary a hint of sonic subtlety. That might sound one-dimensional, but somehow Ian MacKaye and company manage to wring a full spectrum of emotional impact out of that small patch of territory. From typically vociferous political plaints ("Smallpox Champion") to decidedly personal missives designed to provoke self-examination ("Great Cop"), the songs invariably cut to the bone. The highlight? "Cassavetes," which stutters and swells with remarkable grace, paying oblique tribute to John Cassavetes, an outsider director who was to Hollywood what Fugazi is to the music industry.

This is punk rock slowed down to a lope, transformed into angry meditations on, well, a number of things--sometimes alienation, sometimes the fashion industry, and sometimes things too vague really to specify. Fugazi are always interesting, if only because of their absolute willingness to overturn every established punk rock convention (and what could be more punk rock?). On this record, inventiveness generally outpaces quality, and protest songs without catchy melodies--for all their good intentions--are pretty quickly forgotten. Regardless, their trademark staccato guitar attack and fractured rhythms are here in force, and at least two songs, "Reclamation" and "Nice New Outfit," rank with their best.

Fugazi - The Argument (2001)

The Argument is a bracing reminder of Fugazi's confidence and passion, reflecting the experimental impulses of their previous two albums while further refining their songs and arrangements. It's certainly their most expansive album to date, with a supporting cast that includes Bridget Cross (Unrest, Air Miami), Kathi Wilcox (Bikini Kill), Amy Domingues (Ida), and roadie-soundman Jerry Busher. There's a pronounced pop element at work this time: the title track and "Life and Limb" are Fugazi's most subtle tracks yet, their taut guitar and whispery vocals creating a quiet tension. Even a song like "Full Disclosure," which begins with Guy Piciotto's feral howling, ends with lithe harmonies. Meanwhile, tunes like "Ex-Spectator" and "Epic Problem" expand their core attack without sacrificing an iota of its explosiveness. Brendan Canty's sinuous, rock-solid drumming is key in this regard, providing monster hooks even before the guitars come in.

Is Sarah McLachlan a secret punk rocker? To be sure, her rebellion is hushed. On Afterglow, her first studio album since 1997’s Surfacing, McLachlan’s music is as tempered as ever; at times, even the piano chords at the heart of the sound are tucked neatly beneath layer upon layer of strings and overdubbed voices. Listen to what’s being sung within this soothing aural bed, though, and hear the just-before-sleep murmurings of the quietest riot grrl: "I’m a train wreck waiting to happen . . . a wildfire born of frustration," "How stupid could I be . . . you’re no good for me, but you’re the only one I see," "I have to push just to see how far you’ll go." The latter song ("Push") resolves itself with the assurance "You complete me." Ultimately, McLachlan fans will be comforted again by what turns out to be her reliably untroubled aesthetic.

Arcade Fire - Funeral (2004)
