Abdel Gadir Salim

Le Blues de Khartoum/Khartoum Blues

Image

In a country where nationalist lyrics have been the norm and governmental repression the standard response, Abdel Gadir Salim has stood out as a charismatic, yet resolutely non-political, musician: vibrant, successful, innovative, and widely admired. Abdel Gadir was born in Dilling, in the far west of this country, but started out by writing and performing distinctly urban songs that sounded as if they belonged in Khartoum. He studied both classical European and Arabic music at the Khartoum Institute of Music and started playing oud at the suggestion of a friend. In the early 1970s, he moved away from his city sound and turned back toward the musical culture of his own Kordofan province, playing regional folk songs and celebrations of Kodorfan. Sudan is often called the bridge between Arabia and Africa, and Abdel Gair has taken it as his mission to fuse Arabic and African sounds of the country, taking musical scales and motifs from the former and wild percussion from the latter. The lyrics to his songs (he rarely writes the words himself) address any number of themes ranging from traditional love ballads to educational polemics, although he is always careful to avoid antagonizing the Islamic government. Abdel Gadir sometimes likes to sing alone, but more often than not he keeps the company of his seven-piece backing band, the All-Stars, who count the virtuoso saxophonist Hamid Osman Abdalla among their ranks. A successful musician who has appeared on radio and television, recorded in England, and toured widely, Abdel Gadir still manages to divide his time creatively between music and heading a Sudanese school in Chad. He is perfectly showcased on The Merdoum Kings Play Songs of Love

Biography by John Bush
The best and longest preserved of the Mexican cancion ranchera singers, Chavela Vargas began singing rather late in life — past the age of thirty — but continued well into old age, charming audiences until she was well into her 70s. Born in Costa Rica in 1919, she first sang on a professional level in the early '50s, and toured with the legendary José Alfredo Jiménez. Her first recordings appeared in 1961, and she became quite popular during the 1960s and '70s, both in her native land as well as across the ocean in Spain and Europe. Although she retired in 1979, a victim of alcoholism, Vargas returned in 1990 after accepting a role in the Werner Herzog film A Cry of Stone. One year later, she contributed a song to the soundtrack of Tacones Lejanos, and in 1993 she entered a recording studio for the first time in decades.

In the late 1950s and early 1960s in Mexico, singer Chavela Vargas dressed in men’s clothes, drank and smoked cigars like any man, carried a gun with her, and was notorious for her love of women. Some even say that she once kidnapped a woman at gunpoint, but Vargas denies that rumor. However, she doesn’t deny that she gained her slight limp from jumping out of a window because a woman disappointed her in love. If that’s true, Vargas in her youth was every bit as romantic as the music she sang.
A legend in Mexican ranchera music—traditional folk music filled with lusty songs about women and romance and heartbreak—Vargas publicly came out as a lesbian in 2000 at the age of 81, the same year she was awarded Spain’s Great Cross of Isabel la Católica, the country’s highest honor for artistic production.
Speaking to Madrid’s El País newspaper in October 2000, Vargas declared, “I’ve had to fight to be myself and to be respected. I'm proud to carry this stigma and call myself a lesbian. I don't boast about it or broadcast it, but I don't deny it. I've had to confront society and the Church, which says that homosexuals are damned. That's absurd. How can someone who's born like this be judged? I didn't attend lesbian classes. No one taught me to be this way. I was born this way, from the moment I opened my eyes in this world. I've never been to bed with a man. Never. That's how pure I am; I have nothing to be ashamed of. My gods made me the way I am.”

Comments:
The Ensemble Nipponia was formed in 1964 and is dedicated to the performance of traditional and contemporary commissioned work for traditional Japanese instruments. They have been touring all around the world. It is still today one of the most known and most respected traditional Japanese chamber music ensembles. Among its members, the most known musician is Kohachiro Miyata on shakuhachi, who is considered one of today's best Japanese shakuhachi players. On this CD recorded in 1976, you hear a series of traditional classical pieces for solo shakuhachi (a honkyoku piece and a minyo song or folk song) and shamisen, a koto duet, a piece for biwa and voice, an arrangement of a well-known lullaby, and an 18th century piece for voice, shakuhachi, shamisen, and koto. This CD remains still today one of the classics in Japanese music.

These days Latin music means dance music for most audiences around the world, but the folk/protest tradition lives on, with Argentina's Mercedes Sosa still its most formidable and best known exponent.

More info:
Berlin has emerged as one of the great contemporary musical melting pots, and 17 Hippies are surely the finest Berlin band of the moment. They aren't hippies, and there are only 13 of them in their current lineup, but they have created a unique musical style by colliding a variety of mostly European influences, from Gypsy dance to French chanson and German cabaret, with just a hint of anything from ragtime and country to early English pop.
They have an exquisite female singer, Kiki Sauer, who acts like a European answer to China Forbes of Pink Martini, as well as a deadpan male vocalist who can make a country hoedown sound like eerie folk psychedelia, while the backing includes anything from accordion to ukulele, saxophone, cello, violin and harmonica. The lyrics are in French, German and English, and the songs are never quite what you expect. So a grand emotional French ballad somehow manages to include a dash of country jollity, a frantic Gypsy work-out has mysterious echoes of Dylan, and the old Shadows hit, Apache, emerges as a thoughtful, wide-screen epic complete with horns and accordion.

Quote:"There is no doubt about it, the hot name internationally on the Greek music scene is Eleftheria Arvanitaki. Her voice has a clarity and emotional depth that registers whether or not you understand the words, and the music she sings has a lyricism and instrumental sophistication that sets it apart. Her performances at WOMAD festivals in 1998 marked a transition from performing to Greek communities round the world to a new audience of World Music fans. They weren't disappointed" (Simon Broughton, Editor of World Music Rough Guide, 1999)
Eleftheria started her career in the early 80s as the singer of a popular group of rembetika revivalists, named Opisthodromiki Kompania. Rembetika is a music idiom that developed in Greece among the underclasses in the early part of the 20th century and was particularely indebted to the Greek refugees from Asia Minor. In 1985, Eleftheria Arvanitaki began her solo career, which quickly established her as one of the most promising female voices for the years to come..

Eleftheria's vocal qualities and her ability to combine the traditional and contemporary music of Greece have inspired some of the most distinguished composers, lyricists, and poets of the day to write songs for her. Songs that are now considered 'classics' in Greek music. All her albums have gone platinum.

One year later, she contributed a song to the soundtrack of Tacones Lejanos, and in 1993 she entered a recording studio for the first time in decades.

Zein l’Abdin
Background information
Zein l'Abdin was born in 1939 on the Island of Lamu on the northern Kenya coast. His father was a weil-known patron of the arts, himself an accomplished player of the old Swahili lute called kibangala. Zein's father often hosted wealthy merchants arriving from Arabia with the monsoon trade winds. The young Zein witnessed sumptuous feasts and nights of music and dance, when the lute players and musicians accompanying the Arabic crews measured themselves with Ali Baskuta, Zein's maternal uncle, and Lamu's leading 'ud player of the time.
The musical style of Zein and Party is called taarab by the Swahili people of the East African Coast. This is less a stylistic description, since many personal and regional styles exist. Among the Swahili taarab refers to a festive occasion which commonly closes marriage celebrations, and at which this type of music is played.
As with the lyrics, so Zein's music also follows the traditions of the northern coast, by including the rhythms and melodies of many old Swahili ngoma (music-song-dance) events like twari, goma, vugo, together with contemporary dance rhythms like kumbwaya or chakacha.
