Eric Clapton - 1970 Eric Clapton

Image

Eric Clapton's eponymous solo debut was recorded after he completed a tour with Delaney & Bonnie. Clapton used the core of the duo's backing band and co-wrote the majority of the songs with Delaney Bramlett -- accordingly, Eric Clapton sounds more laid-back and straightforward than any of the guitarist's previous recordings. There are still elements of blues and rock & roll, but they're hidden beneath layers of gospel, R&B, country, and pop flourishes. And the pop element of the record is the strongest of the album's many elements -- "Blues Power" isn't a blues song and only "Let It Rain," the album's closer, features extended solos. Throughout the album, Clapton turns out concise solos that de-emphasize his status as guitar god, even when they display astonishing musicality and technique. That is both a good and a bad thing -- it's encouraging to hear him grow and become a more fully rounded musician, but too often the album needs the spark that some long guitar solos would have given it. In short, it needs a little more of Clapton's personality.

Tracks:

01 - Slunky
02 - Bad Boy
03 - Lonesome And A Long Way From Home
04 - After Midnight
05 - Easy Now
06 - Blues Power
07 - Bottle Of Red Wine
08 - Lovin' You Lovin' Me

Jimi Hendrix - War Heroes (1972)

Image

As we all know by now, Jimi Hendrix left behind more unreleased material than just about any other rock artist. Some tracks have rated as all-time classics ("Angel," "Izabella," "Drifting," etc.), while others should have remained in the vaults (such as the full-length albums Crash Landing and Voodoo Soup, two collections that were near-criminally touched up by then-Hendrix keeper Alan Douglas). The out-of-print War Heroes (currently only available on CD as an import from Europe) is one of the few consistent compilations of unreleased Hendrix, and has since been replaced by two recently released albums, First Rays of the New Rising Sun and South Saturn Delta. Highlights include "Beginning" (which contains a riff almost identical to the Stones' "Bitch"), "Highway Chile," and "Izabella," a track premiered on a Dick Cavett TV show a year before Jimi's untimely death. However, not all of the material is up to snuff, such as the nonsensical "Three Little Bears" and "Midnight," an overtly indulgent instrumental. If you're a newcomer to Hendrix, don't start here, but if you're a serious Jimi fan searching for some interesting obscurities, War Heroes is definitely worth the price.

Tracks:

1. Bleeding heart
2. Highway chile
3. Tax free
4. Peter Gunn Catastrophe
5. Stepping Stone
6. Midnight
7. Little Bears
8. Beginning
9. Izabella

Keith Jarrett & Jan Garbarek - Belonging (1974) [1994]

When Keith Jarrett debuted this largely Nordic quartet, he was in the midst of developing a U.S.-based group of the same size with heavy leanings toward the approaches of Ornette Coleman and Paul Bley (even using veterans of Coleman bands). With the Nordic band, Jarrett was better suited to play wistful, melodic vamps that got great mileage out of Jan Garbarek's wavering but mostly vibrato-free tone and the ethereal rhythmic floats supplied by drummer Jon Christensen and bassist Palle Danielsson. "Blossom" is a lengthy, smoldering ballad, as tender as it gets in Jarrett's canon and worth every minor move the group makes. And while things are fairly icy throughout the slower spots, the band slinks into a couple gospel-touched gems, "'Long as You Know You're Living Yours" and the harmonically piled, funky "Windup." All in all, this is not only one of the Jarrett high marks, it's a pinnacle for 1970s jazz overall.

Roger Waters - Amused To Death (1992)

Image

Amused to Death is a solid album both conceptually and musically, showcasing Waters as an artist who, like his work with Pink Floyd, conveys his thoughts and ideals with pinpoint accuracy so that they are engraved within his audience's mind. With this album, Waters touches heavily on the dangers of capitalism, the insensitivity of the human race, the ridiculousness of war, and the onslaught of mindless entertainment that encroaches on mankind on a day-to-day basis. Fitting all these aspects into 14 songs is a task in itself, but accomplishing this task alongside music that is forceful and appealing is extremely difficult, and still Waters succeeds in doing this throughout the duration of the album. "The Ballad of Bill Hubbard" is a moving spoken intro from Alf Razzell, a former member of Britain's Royal Fusiliers. A stab at the false sense of security that lies within religion is dealt with on the powerful "What God Wants, Pt. 1," and the cowardice of the world's leaders is addressed in "The Bravery of Being Out of Range," one of the albums most blatant tracks. Guest guitarist Jeff Beck rises to the occasion on a number of songs here, and both Rita Coolidge and Don Henley fill in behind and beside Waters on a couple of the longer tunes. Ending with the title track, a song that sums up the whole of the album with it's subtle yet hard-hitting demeanor, Waters proves that he can still reveal his conceptual ideas with pristine clarity, only on Amused to Death, the music is as equally entertaining and effective.

Tracks:

1. The Ballad Of Bill Hubbard
2. What God Wants, Part I
3. Perfect Sense, Part I
4. Perfect Sense, Part II
5. The Bravery Of Being Out Of Range
6. Late Home Tonight, Part I
7. Late Home Tonight, Part II
8. Too Much Rope
9. What God Wants, Part II
10. What God Wants, Part III
11. Watching TV
12. Three Wishes
13. It's A Miracle
14. Amused To Death

ako ne najbolji, onda sigurno njihov najpozitivniji album

Pink Floyd - Obscured by clouds (1972)

Image

Obscured by Clouds is the soundtrack to the Barbet Schroeder film La Vallée, and it plays that way. Of course, it's possible to make the argument that Pink Floyd's music of the early '70s usually played as mood music, similar to film music, but it had structure and a progression. Here, the instrumentals float pleasantly, filled with interesting textures, yet they never seem to have much of a purpose. Often, they seem quite tied to their time, either in their spaciness or in the pastoral folkiness, two qualities that are better brought out on the full-fledged songs interspersed throughout the record. Typified by "Burning Bridges" and "Wot's...uh the Deal," these songs explore some of the same musical ground as those on Atom Heart Mother and Meddle, yet they are more concise and have a stronger structure. But the real noteworthy numbers are the surprisingly heavy blues-rocker "The Gold It's in The...," which, as good as it is, is trumped by the stately, ominous "Childhood's End" and the jaunty pop tune "Free Four," two songs whose obsessions with life, death, and the past clearly point toward Dark Side of the Moon. ("Childhood's End" also suggests Dark Side in its tone and arrangement.) As startlingly advanced as these last two songs are, they're not enough to push the rest of Obscured by Clouds past seeming just like a soundtrack, yet these tunes, blended with the sensibility of Meddle, suggest what Pink Floyd was about to develop into.

Tracks:

01. Obscured by clouds
02. When you're In
03. Burning bridges
04. Gold It's in the...
05. Wot's...Uh the deal
06. Mudmen
07. Childhood's end
08. Free four
09. Stay
10. Absolutely curtains

Brian Eno - Music For Glitterbug (1995) [2003]
Personnel: Brian Eno (synthesizer, sound effects); Jah Wobble (keyboards, bass, drums, sound effects); Sussan Deyhim (vocals); Justin Adams (guitar); Mark Ferda (keyboards, percussion); Richard Bailey, Jaki Liebeziet (drums). Includes liner notes by Brian Eno. SPINNER originated as the soundtrack to Derek Jarman's final film, "Glitterbug." Brian Eno's 1995 collaboration with ex-Public Image Limited bassist/producer Jah Wobble is of a piece with Eno's partnership with U2 as the Passengers, applying his idiosyncratic talents to mid-'90s dance music. A third of SPINNER consists of solo keyboard pieces by Eno which would not sound out of place on any of his ambient records, but the rest marries his trademark soundscapes to Wobble's booming, reggae-influenced bass and the polyrhythmic drums of Can's Jaki Liebezeit, with others providing minimal assistance on guitar, percussion, and, on the centerpiece "Unusual Balance," wordless vocals. Until the last three lengthy tracks, the short pieces explore a rhythm or sound only as long as it's fruitful, thereby avoiding the tedium of many ambient records
Brian Eno's ambient soundtrack originated as the score for Derek Jarman's last film Glitterbug, which was released shortly after his death in 1994. Derek never saw it finished, but Jah Wobble was then given the stereo tapes, which he worked over & fired up his inimitable style. This was the very first time that Eno had allowed anyone to work with his original music. It was also the first time for some years that Brian found himself back in the Top 75! 10 tracks. All Saints Records. 1995.

Herbie Hancock - Head Hunters [1970](1997)
Keyboardist Herbie Hancock's remarkable career took a surprising turn with this funk album--one of the first jazz albums to be certified gold. Hancock's already-storied career had included an extended tenure with Miles Davis as a member of both the classic quintet of the '60s and the trumpeter's groundbreaking electric dates. As a leader, the pianist had followed a similar course, cutting both klix acoustic dates (Maiden Voyage, Empyrean Isles) and experimental electric sessions (Sextant, Crossings).

Head Hunters, however, was something different: a stripped-down date featuring reedman Bennie Maupin as the only horn player, and a funk-oriented rhythm section made up of Paul Jackson, Harvey Mason, and Bill Summers. Hancock traded in his sophisticated piano performances and complex compositions for simple melodies, slow-burn funk grooves, and light electric keyboard splashes. The results, particularly on the tracks "Chameleon" and "Watermelon Man," had a profound impact on other musicians, although critics charged Hancock with playing to the galleries. But the album has stood the test of time--something neither the wealth of Hancock's imitators nor his own subsequent albums in this vein have been able to do.
