Open letters issued by a grandson of Saudi Arabia’s founding monarch encouraging senior members of the Al-Saud to depose King Salman, Crown Prince
Mohammed Bin Nayef (MBN) and Deputy Crown Prince Mohamed Bin Salman (MBS) – who, the anonymous writer argues should be replaced with other sons of King Abdelaziz – reveal some of the long-running tensions and divisions within the family.

... It compares them to the “idiocy of Abdullah, the larceny of Sultan and the inadequacy of Salman”. It also refers to the battles that defined the formation of the modern kingdom and the more recent Al-Saud conflicts – notably between King Saud, who was deposed in 1964, and his successor King Faisal – before warning of the failures which led to the collapse of the first two Saudi states in the 19th century.

“How can we accept the marginalisation of the sons of Abdelaziz… the lack of interference in putting in place a king whose mental state makes him ineligible to continue in power… and a person close to the king controlling the country politically, economically and planning as he wishes?”

In a damning reference to MBS’ youth and inexperience, it asks:

“How can we accept that our fate depends on the whims of adolescents and the aspirations of those in a hurry?” In other places, the letter also disparagingly referred to the prince as a “teenager”. It argues that, having stayed silent for so long, the Al-Saud have allowed risks to accumulate and must now “move aggressively” to find a real solution to the problem of “the impotent King Salman”. It argues: “We cannot stop the financial bleeding, political adolescence and military risks, unless we change the decision-making mechanism even if need be by changing the king himself.”

The letter calls on Ibn Saud’s remaining sons (currently 12) – from the eldest, Prince Bandar, to the youngest, Prince Miqrin – to hold an emergency meeting of senior family members to “take all necessary steps to save the country and to make changes in important positions”. It singled out the princes Talal, Turki and Ahmed Bin Abdelaziz as those who should principally re-establish the family’s authority by isolating King Salman and the “prodigal, precipitate, arrogant Mohammed Bin Nayef and the corrupt thief who is damaging the nation, the Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman” – in the same way that King Faisal and his family isolated King Saud. In some parts of the Arab media, Prince Ahmed is already being referred to as “the real crown prince”, suggesting that the supposed generational shift achieved by MBN’s appointment to this position may have been premature.

Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman held talks with French defence minister Jean Yves Le Drian in Riyadh on 12 October. The influential Le Drian was part of a senior French delegation, including Prime Minister Manuel Valls and foreign minister Laurent Fabius. Valls was greeted on arrival at the airport by MBS and Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Nayef. Valls was expected to sign a significant deal on behalf of Airbus Helicopters for the sale of military aircraft.
The premier tweeted on 13 October “France-Saudi Arabia: €10bn-worth of contracts! The government mobilised for our companies and jobs.”

The delegation also attended the Second Saudi-French Business Opportunities Forum and signed a deal for Riyadh to mobilise $2bn-worth of Saudi public investment in French private funds focused on renewable energy.

Oman first made use of its oil resources in 1967 and, by 1969, oil rent represented 40 times the sultanate’s annual revenue of less than a decade earlier. It has an estimated 5.5bn bbls of proven oil reserves and, in 2013, produced 945,000 b/d. According to the US Energy Information Administration, 97% of oil exports in 2013 went to Asian markets, of which nearly 60% went to China.

Oman LNG began exports in April 2000, but gas potential is limited. In September, the Oman-Iran gas pipeline project entered its first phase of implementation after a deal was signed with a company to carry out a land survey to determine the route.

The downward trend arrow on Oman’s economic risk grade shows the pressure exerted by low oil prices on a country which is more vulnerable than the other Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) states.
Oman has the lowest GDP per capita in the GCC, and smaller fiscal reserves than its neighbours. The 2014 budget seemed to recognise the need to get a firm grip on spending, but the 2015 budget has seen spending rise again, and the government is considering a cut in fuel subsidies from 2016.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) predicts growth averaging only 3.6% in 2014-18 and a current account balance of $9.5bn in 2015. Given the demographic time bomb, pressures on the wage bill are set to continue.

The downward trend arrow on Kuwait’s political risk grade reflects the potential for political instability as members of the ruling family jostle for position; the emir is in his mid-eighties; his half-brother Nawaf is expected to succeed him, but there is uncertainty about where power will go next.

Emir Sabah sometimes plays a mediating role within the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) and, in the past year, has shown himself willing to rebuild ties with Iran.

The discovery of oil led to rapid development from the 1950s onwards. Modern state structures were almost all headed by the Al-Sabah, at the expense of the merchant families who had traditionally controlled commerce. Ways of distributing wealth were quickly put in place, offering free education, and health, better water and job guarantees for nationals, and institutionalised economic advantages for the merchants.

Kuwait has crude reserves of around 101.5bn bbls. Oil revenues account for around 90% of the state budget, and, in times of high oil prices, surpluses have been substantial.
The dramatic fall in oil prices since mid-2014 is an obvious downside risk, but should be manageable given Kuwait’s sizeable reserves. There are also
signs that the stuttering projects market is beginning to see a little progress. Kuwait has massive foreign investments; the Kuwait Investment Authority is believed to have more than $500bn of assets around the world; a significant proportion of state revenues has gone into the Fund for Future Generations since it was set up in 1976.

But state subsidies and overall spending levels are not sustainable, and the ineffectual political environment has left Kuwait lagging behind its GCC neighbors in terms of development. Rampant energy consumption has seen Kuwait become dependent on imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG), even though it has substantial reserves.

Izgleda da konkurencija pokusava da vrati, ili barem zeli da se tako misli, staru snagu religioznoj vrhusci na celu s velikim muftijom Abdul Azizom Al-Sheikh-om, ciju je snagu bivsi kralj znacajno oslabio.

Shifting influence on Aramco

MBS, already amassing considerable power as chair of the government’s Council for Economic and Development Affairs, was architect of the plan to separate Aramco from the ministry. Sources canvassed by XXX expressed concern about this, and there are rumblings of discontent among senior figures in the House of Saud about the risk of investing such power in the hands of the untested MBS.

(However, XXX also hears an alternative theory: that there may be advantage in giving the young prince more power than he can handle in order for him to ultimately fail – and be seen to fail.)

Lacey je dobio nevjerovatan pristup informacijama i iskoristio je priliku da sve to pretoci na papir.
Inace se Lacey, uz Frank-a Gardner-a, BBC-jevog dopisnika sigurnosti, smatra jednim od najvecih zapadnih poznavalaca situacije u KSA.

Gardner je danas inace paralizovan, rezultat teoristickog napada na njega i irskog snimatelja Simon-a Cumbers-a, 2004. god., u Al-Suwaidi distriktu u glavnom gradu Rijadu. Cumbers je podlegao povredama.

Odlicna, odlicna knjiga!

Temeljan i detaljan historijat moderne zemlje i kraljevske porodice. Po mom misljenju nesto najbolje napisano o Saudijskoj Arabiji.

Isto tako mogu preporuciti i knjigu Muhammeda Assada "Put u Mekku", koja se dobrim dijelom bavi upravo nastankom moderne Saudijske Arabije i tvorcem drzave ibn Saudom. Knjiga je biografska, pisac je suvremenik prvog kralja moderne S. Arabije.

"Inside the Kingdom" je mnogo bolja knjiga jer autori detaljno ulaze u historijat i porodice i kraljevstva ali "Put u Mekku" je dostupnija, ima u svakoj knjizari.

Ima i Gardnerov dokumentarac o povratku u SA nakon napada na njega mada nije nesto posebno.
