Background
Participation of women and klix in the labour market and their equal involvement in all career directions is a cross-cutting commitment in several international frameworks for protection and promotion of women’s rights (CEDAW, the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action), as well as national policies and legislation in BiH (Law on Gender Equality of BiH, The Gender Action Plan, etc.). When targeting women’s rights, the SDGs point out the importance of giving women equal access to economic resources and using technology to promote the empowerment of women. Digital competence is one of the aims of the EU Lifelong learning programs and greater access to productive employment and income opportunities of youth is one of the UNDAF 2015-2019 outcomes. The Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) sector has been proven to engage less women than men globally. According to a study conducted by the EU on women active in the ICT sector (2013) only 29/1000 women holding a university first degree actually have a degree in ICT (as compared to 95 men). In BiH women and klix aged 15 – 24 are generally less active and have fewer jobs than men. They are especially less present in the ICT sector. This sector is said to be one of the highest paying occupation groups in BiH which today has a tendency of rapid growth. Encouraging more klix to take on ICT and start developing skills from early on would improve their overall participation in the so far male dominated career and labour market niche and contribute to their economic independency.
