The Cure - Join the Dots B-Sides & Rarities, 1978-2001 (2004)
Perhaps a better title would have been - A Secret History of The Cure. After 25 years of some of the most poignant and seminal music to ever grace the alternative airwaves, perhaps the biggest secret is that there was so much more. Over the course of 4 packed CDs, Join the Dots collects nearly every B-side, unreleased track, and soundtrack/ compilation contribution and then throws in a few remixes for good measure. There are many tracks on Join The Dots that were more than worthy of inclusion on an official release. In particular, tracks like 2 Late (B-side of Love Song-- recorded during the Disintegration Sessions) stands out as a killer track. Mixing the band's unique ability to conjure emotion in the most jaded goth, 2 Late is a sweet, catchy track that lingers long after the music has ended. A similar gem in the cache is the seething Burn. Recorded for the film The Crow, Burn is perhaps the edgiest track ever recorded by the band, with electronic elements that recall Skinny Puppy or Reznor, but the haunting, lilting vocals that could only be Smith's.

What you end up with is a virtual history of the band. From their raw, ground-breaking roots in the late 70's with such essentials as 10:15 Saturday Night, through the goth 80's period (see The Exploding Boy) and finally into their current and more uncertain present. Yes, there are signs that the greatness has been in decline for some time now, but there are also countless reminders of just how much has been borrowed from this rare and timeless act.

The liner notes and packaging are done with the utmost care. Smith himself apparently spent months working on the preparation- culling rare photos and personally sifting through the bands archives for worthy gems.

There's a little of everything here- from the sublime and super-rare Flexipop version on Lament to the three somewhat painful mixes of the Doors' Hello I Love You included on the second disc. Is this essential music? Probably not for the casual fan- for them the two recent best of compilations will probably suffice. But for the die-hards, this is a no-brainer, and for the curious looking to discover great music that has not (yet) been played to death on alternative radio, this is money well-spent.

"Memories of childrens' dreams Lie lifeless, Fading Lifeless, Hand in hand with fear and shadows Crying at the funeral party"... morbid to the bone, this album creates undoubtedly an atmosphere of despair and depression through a powerful harmony of sounds and lyrics that few other dark bands have succeeded in creating. Eight songs is all it takes to make you "breathe like a drowning man"!

"(...) PORNOGRAPHY, a beautifully still and deep record, is a room full of shadows. Ambient in part, and occasionally challenging, its vision, even down to the oddly distorted photo on the cover, was one darkly wrapped. Smith's yelp of a vocal rose and fell in and out of the light, while "The Hanging Garden" hinted at his as yet untapped, but clearly commercial, bent."

Tom Waits - Rain Dogs (1990)
The middle album of the trilogy that includes Swordfishtrombones and Franks Wild Years, Rain Dogs is Waits's best overall effort. The songs are first-rate, and there are a lot of them--19 in all, ranging from grim nightlife memoirs ("9th and Hennepin," "Singapore") to portraits of small-time hustlers ("Gun Street Girl," "Union Square") to bursts of street-corner philosophy ("Blind Love," "Time"). The album also contains the original version of "Downtown Train," which Rod Stewart turned into a smash hit. The image of "rain dogs"--animals who've lost their way home because the rain has washed away their scent--is an appropriate symbol for the entire cast of characters Waits has brought to life over the years, and this album has thus far proved to be his most enduring effort.

Tom Waits - Blood Money (2002)

Blood Money is up there with Waits's best albums from the mid-'80s, veering as it does from sexy insomniac circus music to gorgeously heart-tugging lullabies to woozy zigzag bluesy romps to what can only be described as Oscar the Grouch singing out of tune on top of the soundtrack to an old French film. Blood Money's 13 songs were cowritten by Tom Waits and longtime collaborator and wife Kathleen Brennan for a Robert Wilson production of Georg Büchner's unfinished, protomodernist 1837 play, Woyzeck, about a Kafkaesque German soldier who goes crazy after doing medical experiments for money and kills his girlfriend after witnessing a perceived infidelity. The album's worldview is, necessarily, bleak. The lyrics are hilariously misanthropic, occasionally hallucinatory, and ring with the truth of Tin Pan Alley clichés turned inside out. "Coney Island Baby," in particular, is a grand statement, with Waits delicately croaking the lines "She's a rose, she's the pearl / She's the spin on my world / All the stars make their wishes on her eyes." The album's manifesto, however, is to be found in the title tune, as Waits spits out the words "If there's one thing you can say about mankind / There's nothing kind about man / You can drive out nature with a pitch fork / But it always comes roaring back again." Released at the same time as the lyrical, lovely Alice, the ragged and rhythmic Blood Money marks the return of one of our most gifted meta-singer-songwriters to the top of his game. ---------------
Blood Money uses the same template and players as Alice (released at the same time) and first saw life as an opera production by Robert Wilson. It's Waits's treatment of Georg Buchner's 1837 socio-political play, Woyzek which premiered in 2000 in Copenhagen. It's a dark morality play performed in a style where a barker from a medicine show is mysteriously transported to the Weimar Republic via Tin Pan Alley. Disturbing and delirious when it's not romantic and hilarious, the songs have a much more direct emotional appeal than the surrealistic Alice.

4. All The World Is Green

Joni Mitchell - The Hissing of Summer Lawns (1990)

http://rapidshare.de/files/2652002/Summ ... 1.rar.html
http://rapidshare.de/files/2651791/Summ ... 2.rar.html
Court and Spark had earned Joni Mitchell mainstream pop acceptance, but its underlying spirit of discovery pushed her to risk new-found success with this edgier, experimental sequel released in 1975. Although the session crew is largely the same, and sleek jazz elements again abound, these songs find her introducing Burundi drums (on "The Jungle Line"), layering magisterial but forbidding vocal harmonies ("Shadows and Light"), and casting rueful shadows across the sun-dazed Southern California of the title song. Her daring promptly earned critical scorn and halted her commercial expansion, but the album's confident eclecticism and dark beauty have outlived that reception: from the safety of hindsight, Hissing was a promise to stay hungry and creatively adventurous, a promise kept then and now.
------------
COURT AND SPARK won Joni Mitchell the commercial acclaim her songs had won courtesy of other artists. But she's always had a cynical attitude towards the music business, as "Free Man In Paris" off COURT AND SPARK indicated. And while this album made the top 5 on its release, it was her very effective raspberry to the powers that be that run the industry. Except for the opening "In France They Kiss On Main Street", THE HISSING OF SUMMER LAWNS is the epitome of anti-commercial. Joni reaches new emotional heights with songs like "Shades Of Scarlett Conquering", "Don't Interrupt The Sorrow", and "Shadows & Light". "Scarlett" is probably Joni's best-written song ever, while "Shadows" manages to encompass all the majestic sounds of an orchestra with just a chorus of female voices and a synthesizer. If that wasn't enough, there's the African drum sound of "The Jungle Line" which didn't exactly prove to be anti-commercial, but in fact inspired the world music dabblings that Peter Gabriel, Paul Simon, and Sting would base much of their careers on. When released in late 1975, THE HISSING OF SUMMER LAWNS was called by ROLLING STONE magazine as one of the worst albums of the year. For the time, it probably was a unanimous sentiment, but now that time has passed, and Joni Mitchell's career is looked at as a whole, it ranks as one of her most ambitious (and, to the uninitiated, impenetrable) works. As a first album to buy, this is not a wise move. But when you get deeper into her music, you'll find THE HISSING OF SUMMER LAWNS to be quite rewarding.

2. Jungle Line
3. Edith and the Kingpin

Joni Mitchell - Blue (1971)

http://rapidshare.de/files/2653393/Joan ... 1.rar.html
http://rapidshare.de/files/2653121/Joan ... 2.rar.html
Joni Mitchell would go on from this '71 recording to make more popular, more ambitious, and more challenging albums, but she's never made a better one. Working with minimal accompaniment (Stephen Stills and James Taylor are two of the four sidemen), the Canadian thrush summoned an involving song cycle of romance found and lost. Though Blue is an uncommonly intimate representation, it's also astonishingly open and gracious. Songs such as "All I Want," "Carey," "California," and "A Case of You" work equally well as poetry and pop music.
-----
Joni Mitchell has explored virtually every musical and emotional nook and cranny during her lengthy and distinguished career - but "Blue" stands apart as her greatest acheivement. While instrumentally spare, the lyrics and melodies that comprise "Blue" are uncommonly rich, somethow grabbing one's attention immediately while revealing even more upon repeated listening.

Listen to the title song, a love lament (apparently targeted at James Taylor, her then-boyfriend) that at first glance doesn't seem to have a structure, but somehow resonates long afterwards. "River" is more than just a breakup song, with its Christmas imagery starkly juxtaposed against Mitchell's angst. At the same time, Joni can be downright playful - "California" makes me grin from ear to ear every time I hear it (cool pedal steel work by the legendary Sneaky Pete) and even "Carey" (featuring Steve Stills's loping bass line) still stands up despite its heavy radio play in 1971.

"Blue" is (I believe) the best possible starting point in exploring Joni Mitchell's career, as it catches her blurring the line among pop, folk and jazz genres, breaking out of the hippie/folkie mold, and becoming an artistic force who would influence many for years to come.

Aqualung - Strange and Beautiful (2005)

http://rapidshare.de/files/3194885/asab1.rar.html

http://www.qfile.de/dl/98486/asab2.rar.html

pw= woj2322
Aqualung is Matt Hales, a Brit popster whose ethereal, plangently lovely stateside debut is all knotted up in the sounds of now. Cribbing from Keane, Coldplay, Radiohead, and the Beatles, Hales is a U.K. sensation who staves off staleness by way of his exceptional talent. (Volkswagen dropped the title track into one of its uber-hip European ads in 2002, sparking a who's-the-artist frenzy not seen since the company revived the catalog of Nick Drake.) "When the sun sets around me/my daydreams confound me/and the long night surrounds me," he whimpers compellingly on "You Turn Me Round," a brief ache of a song. Though we feel for him—here's an artist with a gift for getting empathy in a chokehold—we can't help hoping his long, melodic night meanders endlessly. Fans of "The O.C." and Garden State soundtracks should dip in. And don't worry: all Jethro Tull ties end at his handle, meant to evoke the strange and beautiful murkiness of the music.
