Status Quo - Hello (1991)

Following the success of , Status Quo opted not to change a thing, unfurling the mind-numbing boogie attack of The strategy worked, resulting in the group's first number one album and in "Caroline," its first top-five single. Mostly, the album succeeds in spite of itself. "Roll Over Lay Down," not immediately impressive, builds into a tizzy over the course of five minutes. It is one-upped by "Caroline," the definitive Status Quo rock song, a not particularly hard or fast four-on-the-floor stomp saved by a massive, deceptively simple guitar hook. "Forty-Five Hundred Times," less catchy but harder rocking, is brutally long, but is rescued by its placement as the album's closer. In between, the group, writing in some instances with coordinator Robert Young, offer up slight variations of their standard formula. Several of those, like the rickety, Beatlesque "Claudie" and the bluesy "Softer Ride" transcend their three-chords-and-a-riff construction enough to render them decent, memorable pop songs. Down to the proto-Spinal Tap black-on-black cover, this was the vanguard of British denim rock in 1975, and given the narrow conceptual and technical limits within which the Status Quo had to work, it has held up well, though it is certainly not for the faint of heart or attention span. Clearly the product of a band at their commercial and creative peak, wears its strengths and weaknesses well: not particularly flashy or intelligent, but without exception confident, comfortable and fun.

Simple Plan - Still Not Getting Any... (2004)

On which our Canadian punk-pop heroes testify that life still sucks major ass even after achieving multiplatinum success. With the strummy first single, "Welcome to My Life," singer Pierre Bouvier whines, "You might think I'm happy/But I'm not gonna be OK." And in the chorus to "Thank You," he tries sarcasm but still sounds earnest: "Thank you for showing me that best friends cannot be trusted." But whether or not these boys are being drama queens is beside the point. Despite the overwrought angst, Still Not Getting Any . . . is a hard-to-deny collection of bubblegum punk. Producer Bob Rock gives the band sinewy sonic muscles on songs such as "Perfect World" and "Promise," and there's hardly a track in the bunch that doesn't sound like a hit. The midtempo anthem "Crazy" finds Bouvier rattling off a laundry list of social ills ("Young klix dying to be on TV," "Money's our first priority") before asking, "Is everybody going crazy?/Is anybody gonna save me?" It's goofy as all hell, but don't be surprised if you catch yourself singing along.

Massive Attack - Danny The Dog [SOUNDTRACK] (2004)

Massive Attack's Danny the Dog is a non-diagetic soundtrack to the film of the same name that follows the story of a street-fighter who has spent his life being cruelly treated as a dog. Since the music is a system of the entire film, very little is structured as one might expect a complete song to be. There are moments of classic Massive Attack such as "Collar Stays On" and "Polaroid Girl" where downbeat, trip-hop drums are laid over the band's characteristic grooves, but this is not a typical artist album. However, despite for the most part being accompaniment, songs like "One Thought at a Time" and "I Am Home", stand out for their structure, the former having a great, sixties psychedelic guitar-sounding hook. Another highlight is "Two Rocks an a Cup of Water", an emotional piece voiced on plucked strings, bell-shaped waves and piano, best described as Boards of Canada in an easy listening mood. Danny the Dog should not be treated as the latest album by Massive Attack for without the moving image it seems in-complete but it does contain some beautiful pieces of atmospheric music that should serve the film very well indeed.

Snow Patrol - Final Straw (2004)

Final Straw, third album from Glasgow-based quintet Snow Patrol, is a darker, nastier and altogether bleaker beast than anything they've produced before. These are ostentatiously pop melodies that have been locked up in a basement, blindfolded over night and subjected to gleefully twisted torture and cruelty until they've squealed. The bruised, distorted (yet basically acoustic) "Wow" highlights this methodology best, producing an ugly princess of a song that sounds like U2 from the Achtung Baby era. There's even handclapping over a dangerously fuzzed-up guitar riff on "klix Little Fractures". Lead single "Spitting Games" is what the Thrills will sound like in 10 years time if a decade's worth of rock & roll excess takes its toll--it possesses the kind of catchy, fuzzed-up, demented bumblebee guitar hook that most bands spend their careers searching for. 
"Chocolate" is more introspective, with its undulating drum pattern and fairy background guitar--"On my knees I'll think clearer...what have I done? What have I become?" croons Gary Lightbody with lethargic despair and weary horror. Less is most definitely more on "Grazed Knees", which sounds like some of Feeder's quirkier and quieter moments, backed up by a stirring, perfectly placed string section. Special mention must go to Garret Lee's production, which drops imperfections, crackles and white noise randomly into the mix to startling effect. Intelligent, interesting, honest, diverse and ever so slightly screwed up...

George Clinton & The P-Funk Allstars - T.A.P.O.A.F.O.M. (The Awesome Power of a Fully Operational Mothership) (1996)

There is a reason why Sir George is an icon to so many of the young hip-hop crowd. The fact is plain and simple: the man can jam. No better proof than in this album from 1996. It may be five years old but the funk has never sounded funkier (Forgive the redundancy!).
Clinton and the P-Funk All-stars (Bootsy Collins, Ray Davis, Lashonda Clinton among others) take the listener on an all-encompassing journey through the wonders of the musical universe with a solidified amalgamation of uncensored cosmic music. Yeah, that description is wordy, but Clinton deserves it.

Only Clinton could feature the line "I can do it like hot greens on Al Green," found in the song "Funky Kind (Gonna Knock It Down." Other stellar selections are "Summer Swim," "New Spaceship" featuring the Gap Band's Charlie Wilson on vocals, "Flatman and Bobbin," reminiscent of Parliament's 70's heyday, "Rock the Party," and the two versions of the title cut.

Thomas Alan Waits was born on the eighth anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He was born on December 7, 1949 in Pomona, California. He and his two sisters grew up moving around from city to city in California. His parents who are both school teachers divorced when he was 10. They then moved to National City. Tom's grandfather was christened Jesse Frank Waits and his father Frank Waits. Tom is Scottish and Irish from his father's side of the family and Norwegian from his mother's side.

Tom became interested in music early and began tacking up sheets of Bob Dylan's lyrics in his room and even framed some in the rest of his house. He would keep a pad of paper and pencil by his bed so that he could remember the lyrics that he would think up in the middle of the night. He taught himself how to play the piano at a neighbor's house and then learned the guitar on a Gibson.

As well as creating music at an early age, the persona that Tom is famous for soon appeared. He enjoyed entertaining his classmates and his teachers as soon as his secondary schooling. An art class teacher would let him play his harmonica for the class and sometimes he would be asked to get up on the tables and do his version of a "soft shoe". He also tried as soon as possible to grow a mustache and a goatee. Sal, Tom's employer at "Napoleone's Pizza House", used to joke that he had more hair growing wild on his ass than Tom could cultivate on his face.

During his adolescence, Tom spent quite some time keeping his cars running. He first had problems with his '54 Ford station wagon that he called a "bato wagon". He then worked on his '55 Buick which was to be inspiration for the song "Ole '55" which the Eagles covered. He then progressed to the '61 white volkswagen where he finally learned how to drive a stick shift.

Waits has told at least two different ways of how he got the big break into the music business:

    * Break #1: Herb Cohen is impressed when he sees the doorman of LA's Heritage Club sing a few of his original songs, and then signs him to Asylum Records.
    * Break #2: Herb Cohen falls into conversation with Tom Waits at Ben Frank's on Sunset Strip, and signs him to his management roster on the strength of his shoes.

He began his career living in the famed Tropicana Motel on Santa Monica Blvd. in LA which is somewhat near the corner of Hollywood and Vine. He toured alot where he supposedly opening for such varied acts like C&W superstar Charlie Rich, pianist Billy Preston, John Hammond, Jerry Jeff Walker, and even Buffalo Bob & The Howdy Doody Review?. During this time he was klix Rickie Lee Jones whom was featured on the "Blue Valentine" album cover. After his career was more stable and while on the Zoetrope set of "One From The Heart", directed by Francis Ford Coppola, Tom met his future wife,Kathleen Brennan, who was a script editor at the time.

Kathlen Brennan was born in Johnsburg, Illinois. Waits described their courtship as a little unorthodox: "She can lie down on nails, stick a knitting needle through her lip and still drink coffeee, so I knew she was the girl for me." They were married in August 1980 and honeymooned in Tralee, Co. Kerry. When Patrick Humphries asked Tom Waits about the marriage ceremony, he said: "I found the Marriage Chapel in the Yellow Pages, right next to 'Massage'. The registrar's name was Watermelon and he kept calling me Mr. Watts! My mother likes what I do, I guess she's happier now that I'm married. I think she was a little bit worried about me for a while." Kathleen Brennan has been a major factor in his music and his life ever since.

Jimmy Eat World - Futures (2004)

The road to success is not an easy one - but some handle its hurdles better than others. In 2001 Jimmy Eat World was a widely adored but criminally underappreciated band capable of drawing capacity crowds all over the world, but unable to find a record deal to their liking. Having just been unceremoniously spit out of the major label machinery, the band opted to record a new album entirely on its own dime and let labels come a-calling. Not bad for a little band from Mesa! , Arizona. But then came the problem once all your rock dreams come true, what do you do for an encore? The band's new album, Futures, is the answer to that question. It's a sprawling, gorgeous, heavy-yet-quiet epic with songs ranging from ambitious hard rock to epic ballads. With the hard driving first single "Pain" kicking off the campaign to the beautifully constructed follow up single "Work," Futures is perhaps the best sounding record in Jimmy Eat World's career.

Nirvana may have been the biggest thing in the music world in the early '90s, but the trio maintained an uncommon devotion to core fans who knew them when they were still sleeping in a van. Fending off the adoration of punk-rock dabblers in the media and their audience while simultaneously welcoming stalwart underground-music supporters, Kurt Cobain did things on his own terms--until it all came crashing down. A decade after Cobain's 1994 suicide and the band's demise, With the Lights Out remains true to the ethos that defined the band and the alt-rock revolution that rose and fell with them. 
Eschewing the standard hits-sprinkled-with-rarities mix, this lovingly compiled three-CD is made up almost entirely of previously unreleased selections. The handful of previously heard tracks are obscurities along the lines of the group's cover of "Here She Comes Now," recorded for a 1990 indie-rock tribute to the Velvet Underground. But it's not the B-sides and compilation oddities that define this idiosyncratic set; rather, its spirit is captured in the bedroom demos, radio performances, and sloppy amateur video recordings that catch Cobain and cohorts developing from just another punk- and metal-inspired bunch of grunge rockers pounding away in the bass player's mom's living room into a band that defined an era.

The box set spans Nirvana's entire career, from a recording of Led Zeppelin's "Heartbreaker" at the band's first show in 1987 to solo acoustic performances from singer-guitarist Kurt Cobain in 1994. With The Lights Out features a 60-page color booklet with rare photos and liner notes by Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore and writer Neil Strauss. The three CDs, arranged largely chronologically contains home and rehearsal demos, including for "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (whose lyric "With the lights out" provides the set's title), "Rape Me," "Heart Shaped Box" and a trio penned by legendary bluesman Leadbelly. Heard in the 12 previously unreleased solo acoustic tracks are such gems as "All Apologies," "Lithium" and "Sliver." Six previously unreleased radio performances range from "Anorexorcist" in 1987 to "Dumb" in 1991 (two years before it was on 1993's In Utero). Along with the remaining debuts are a handful of earlier issued, though rare, b-sides and demos as well as the original Butch Vig mix of "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Highlighted on the With The Lights Out DVD is a previously unreleased video of nine songs performed in 1988 at bassist Krist Novoselic's mother's house in Aberdeen, Washington; the rare "In Bloom" Sub Pop music video, and 10 never-before-seen live performances. Noteworthy among them are debut renditions of "Pennyroyal Tea", "Smells Like Teen Spirit" both from early 1991. Also premiering is an unlikely performance of Jacques Brel and Rod McKuen's "Seasons In The Sun" shot at a Rio de Janeiro studio.

Very decent fifteen track disc.Twelve of these tunes were originally released in 1982 and were slated to be a Dave Brock solo release.Guess he changed his mind.There are three brand new tracks on here,"Indentimate","Damage Of Life"(the band sometimes still play this number on tour),and the somewhat mesmerizing "Mists Of Meridin".Even though Brock is the only original member on 'Church Of...',it's still very much in the Hawkwind vein.Trippin' compositions would be the nicely flowing "Nuclear Drive","Fall Of Earth City"(cool song title,eh?),and "Experience With klix".The complex and the well-timed synth sounds are STILL very much intact.A very good progressive/space later day release.

A Perfect Circle - Mer de Noms (2000)

A Perfect Circle is not a side project," proclaim the members of Perfect Circle. It's a caution worth heeding, since the most identifiable name in the band is that of vocalist Maynard James Keenan, lead singer of Tool. On the other hand, one wouldn't be much inclined to file this one under "side project" anyway. The musicians involved go to great lengths to create something distinctive, and if the uniformity of sound can be attributed to the fact that guitarist Billy Howerdel (whose previous songwriting credits include Tool, the Smashing Pumpkins, and David Bowie) is responsible for the lion's share of the music, well, the others aren't exactly marching in lockstep. Keenan's vocals here are quite different from anything heard from him before. Subtle, thoughtful, sober, they're a far cry from Keenan's work with Tool, which is what makes this album more than a side-project curiosity. Mer de Noms has a life all its own.
