John Scofield - That's What I Say: John Scofield Plays the Music of Ray Charles (06/2005)

http://www.qfile.de/dl/76844/that1.rar.html
http://www.qfile.de/dl/76864/that2.rar.html
Although sure to be criticized for cashing in on the Ray Charles bandwagon, jazzman John Scofield’s 2005 tribute release is also one of the most varied yet successful albums in the guitarist’s extensive catalog. Shifting from a big band/multi-vocalist approach for the classic "What’d I Say" featuring an all-star lineup of Dr. John, Warren Haynes, Aaron Neville, John Mayer and Mavis Staples trading verses (they all also take solo vocals on other tracks), along with longtime Charles saxist David "Fathead" Newman, to the lone guitar rendition of "Georgia on my Mind" that closes the disc, Scofield celebrates both Charles’ music and his eclectic approach to it. The stripped down instrumental version of "Crying Time" with only funereal organ accompaniment is perfectly offset by the following gospelized reading of "I Can’t Stop Loving You," brought home by Mavis Staples’ explosive vocal. Teen throb John Mayer acquits himself admirably on vocals and guitar, singing and trading licks with Scofield on a rugged "I Don’t Need No Doctor," and Dr. John brings New Orleans soul on a greasy "Talkin’ Bout You"/"I Got a Woman" medley. The horn section gets a workout on powerfully swinging instrumental takes of "Hit the Road Jack" and "Let’s Go Get Stoned." Scofield’s quivering solos show moderation yet convey the music’s R&B roots, even when he’s turning up the heat on a rousing Medeski, Martin and Wood -styled, acid laced "Sticks and Stones." Producer/drummer Steve Jordan finds the perfect vibe between jazz and R&B, and keeps the guest vocalists from stealing the spotlight. He provides the ideal framework for John Scofield’s fiery yet restrained playing and a fitting tribute to a jazz/R&B icon.

FUNERAL FOR A FRIEND - Hours (2005)

Code: Select all

Hours strengthens most of the Funeral for a Friend sound, the one they had so much success with on the 2003 debut, Casually Dressed & Deep in Conversation. The Welsh combo still doesn't do anything that different from its peers, adhering to the post-hardcore/emo formula of self-righteous vocals, hooky dynamics, impassioned screaming, and underpinnings of time spent listening to Deftones and Get Up Kids records. But Hours gives the kids what they want right out of the gate, and has flashes of brilliance in its more upbeat material. "Who was it that said that great things come to great men?" Matt Davies asks at the outset of "All the Rage." "Well that fucker lied to us/There's nothing here but a wasteland." The sentiment recasts the teenage wasteland of yore, replacing hope for redemption with the blank stare of apathy. "How many times can I say I'm sorry and really mean it?" Musically it's a melodic hardcore rager, full of flinty guitar runs and anxious hitches in the percussion. It sounds similar to what listeners have heard before, but runs deeper than most. Unfortunately, Funeral for a Friend are less unique in the ballad department. "Hospitality"'s plaintive crying isn't distinctive, and its arrangement recycles Def Leppard for a generation just discovering how much love bites. "Drive," too, is the height of melodrama with its "This could be a movie" centerpiece. But the single "Streetcar" has a nagging urgency in its melody, and "Monsters" and the metal redux "End of Nothing" are equally strong. Funeral for a Friend never lose their youthful vigor, their wonder about the promise of life as well as its bad places. This helps them, because you believe that they aren't just going through the motions. Hours falters when it slows. But when it kicks up a racket the album screams like the conscience of a kid finally given a voice.

John McLaughlin & Shakti - Best of Shakti (1994)

Fabulous Indo-jazz fusion from a fun-loving foursome

What did geeks do before there were microchips to absorb their time and devotion? They aspired to play awesome guitar, with the emphasis very much on technical skills. And among the many guitar idols of those days, few were revered as highly as John McLaughlin. He was the epitome of lightening fast runs and technical complexity, the awesome uber-geek. And that's a great shame, because there was and is a lot more to McLaughlin than geek-inspiring speed.

In the mid-70s, McLaughlin made a logical progression from the amped-up power of the Mahavishnu Orchestra to the acoustic prana power of Shakti, in the company of three skillful Indian musicians. He switched his trademark twin-necked electric for a steel-strung acoustic with "sympathetic"strings and a "scalloped" fingerboard, which I presume means it has a deep action so that he could bend notes sitar-style. "The Best of Shakti" gives an inspiring taste of this fun-loving fabulous foursome.

The opening track, "Joy" might be more aptly dubbed "Exhilaration". The Shaktis take great delight in bending and bouncing rhythmic and melodic phrases back and forth with huge energy for a breathless and all-too-brief 18 minutes The other tracks vary the pace, from brisk to meandering, but the interplay between these master musicians is always a delight.

You don't have to listen out for fast - that's a given. Try instead tuning in to McLaughlin's rhythmic play, his intriguing broken chords, his angular runs, for the space he creates as well as the space he fills.

Between them, percussionists Vikku and Zakir Hussein probably put out fewer raw decibels than Mahivishnu drummer Billy Cobham did. But what they lack in muscle power, they make up for in dexterity, swing and sheer playfulness. Violinist Shankar's swooping style is exhilarating although it might occasionally a tad too keening for listening after a heavy night

All in all a wonderful collection that gets the toes tapping, the ears tingling and the spirit soaring.

Talvin Singh - OK (1998) ****
OK is one phrase that's universally known and understood, and on OK Talvin Singh tries for a similar global connection. A classically trained tabla player, he's performed with Björk and Massive Attack, holds his own club nights in London, and is the leading light of the burgeoning Asian Underground movement--in other words, a man of many parts. He brings them all together here--the Bollywood strings, the kannakol patterns of Indian music, and the skittering rhythms of drum & bass and jungle--to create something that is new and thoroughly vibrant. This is Britain at the millennium, drawing on its immigrants, full of Eastern promise, and ready to dive headlong into the future. An album of both intelligence and passion, it is more than OK; it's a complete marvel. --Chris Nickson

Rolling Stone
Driven by Singh's own tabla, the frenetic drum-and-bass beats anchor haunting flute lines and buzzing sitars but rarely push the music into surprising areas.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Clap Your Hands Say Yeah (06/2005)

http://rapidshare.de/files/2548354/CYHSY-ST1.rar.html
http://rapidshare.de/files/2548733/CYHSY-ST2.rar.html
Maybe no one told Clap Your Hands Say Yeah that first impressions are important. Or maybe they've just got massive sack. Either way, their self-released, self-titled debut CD opens with the weirdest, most potentially grating bit of snake-oil salesmanship you're likely to hear until Tom Waits puts out another record. I happen to dig the song, entitled "Clap Your Hands!" (a theme is emerging), but a maniacal carny barking over a stuttering calliope isn't for everyone. Those who persevere, though, will quickly discover that this garish foyer gives out onto spacious, elegant chambers of clean lines and soft lights.

Clap Your Hands are a five-piece from Brooklyn who're known to break out both harp and harmonica. They've recently been garnering rave press in their home city, and, over just the past two weeks, burning up the internet like a vintage Lohan nipslip. The pundits are saying Wilco (not hearing it), Talking Heads (okay), and Neutral Milk Hotel (getting warmer), but if it checks in with a number of modern and classic new wave referents, the music sings for itself: Clap Your Hands traffics in melodic, exuberant indie rock that pairs the shimmering, wafting feel of Yo La Tengo with a singular vocal presence that sounds like Paul Banks attempting to yodel through Jeff Mangum's throat. Or imagine the Arcade Fire if their music were more fun-loving and less grave.

Of course, if Clap Your Hands had a press kit, it would undoubtedly include something about "synthesizing these influences into a sound that's uniquely their own." And for once, it would be true. On the album's first true song, "Let the Cool Goddess Rust Away", a wailing vocal evokes Walkmen frontman Hamilton Leithauser, as hitching, muted guitars and singing melodic ones twist and furl over throbbing bass. On "Over and Over Again (Lost and Found)", the band veers into more Interpol-ish territory, with small, stripped guitars and bass, a thin synth wash, and lilting vocals with woozily yawning vowels. Same goes for the iridescent guitars, purring synths, and weary vocals of "Details of the War".

The record is consistently, remarkably strong, but "The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth" in particular stands out, with its richly buzzing synth phrases, textbook Modest Mouse guitar lead (a trebly, gliding string bend skimming over the rhythm like a flat stone over a pond), contrapuntal bass, and shuffling drums. The song also features one of vocalist Alec Ounsworth's most memorable performances: He ramps up the urgency as the heavier chords kick in, his voice cracking and shifting in cascading waves as if someone were pressing his vocal cords to a fret board and bending them. "Is This Love?", with its clean, galloping guitars and fruit loop synth trills is the song most blatantly redolent of Neutral Milk Hotel (especially of the unhinged pop and careening vocals Mangum favored on On Avery Island), and its dizzily wowing vocal harmonies carry over to "Heavy Metal", where fuzzed-out bass and wheezing harmonica punch smart shapes into the fizzy guitars.

There's something really refreshing about stumbling across a great band that's trembling on the cusp without any sort of press campaign or other built-in mythology-- you actually get to hear the music with your own ears. While a lot of bands view the promotional apparatus as a necessary evil, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah prove that it's still possible for a band to get heard, given enough talent and perseverance, without a PR agency or a label. Indie rock has received a much-needed kick in the pants, and we have the rare chance to decide what a band sounds like of our own accord before any agency cooks up and disseminates an opinion for us. Damn, maybe this is how it's supposed to work!

Spice klix - Forever - [Album] Nov 2000 - 128Kbps .mp3

Gone are the cuddly wannabes of yesteryear, replaced by thinner, tougher glamazons of the new millennium Spice World. But Forever's strategy is a serious misstep - one that will disappoint their old fans and alienate new ones. "Holler," the first single, is standard-issue urban pop, with a beat you've heard before and terribly generic lyrics, promising to make you "do things you thought you would never do." As a matter of fact, you've heard all of this before: for "Tell Me Why," the klix bite the computer-generated voice from TLC's Fan Mail, and borrow the vocoder from Cher's "Believe" sessions. "Right Back at Ya," their official comeback anthem, is trite and predictable: "Our friendship is forever," Baby Spice testifies.

"You thought we wouldn't make it this far," Sporty sneers, and she's right. But they haven't made it yet - and with this material they don't deserve to.
