The Virgin Suicides (2000)

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=LQVU0YU4
Air's debut, Moon Safari, solidified the French duo's position among fickle electronica music fans and earned them critical accolades throughout the press. Yet one of their most important fans turned out to be Sofia Coppola (daughter of Francis Ford), who, inspired by their moody ambiance, asked them to write the soundtrack for her directorial debut. The Virgin Suicides--adapted from the novel by Jeffrey Eugenides about the Lisbon sisters and their quest for answers in a turbulent American adolescence--includes stars such as Kirsten Dunst and Kathleen Turner, and Air make a deeply impressionistic subliminal appearance as well. Gordon Tracks sings the lush and romantic "Playground Love"; the rest is a throbbing score of somber synths and thick washes of modest psychedelic touches that recall the tranquil buzz that comes from too much staring at the lava lamp. The only complaint is that this 13-track album is only 40 minutes long; some of the cuts should have been longer. The meditative quality practically demands it.

Run Lola Run (1999)

wma files
Co-composed by director Tom Tykwer, the idea here is brilliantly simple--the punk-like Lola's pavement pounding needs constant momentum to avoid coming off as Marathon footage. With accelerating beats, and ever-upwardly spiralling chord progressions, we follow actress/song-writer Franka Potente's every footfall. In the booklet you'll find a candidly honest piece of advice: "To re-experience the movie, listen to tracks 2-9. For an alternative experience, listen to the remixes." They are quite abstract developments of the original material, so can either be seen as a bonus or padding (e.g. the original "Casino" takes us the furthest away from club territory, while the remix races right back into it). At breakneck pace this album perfectly captures the experience of seeing the movie while the barrage of techno beats keeps up a rhythmic sprint that'll have you tapping feet if not wanting to run and see the film straight away. --Paul Tonks

Chorus (Les Choristes) [2005]

http://sasgmerl.free.fr/Les%20Choristes.zip
Already a box office sensation with a million-selling soundtrack in its native France, writer/director Christopher Barratier's tale of a post-war music teacher's lasting impact on his young charges rode its formulaic Hollywood roots all the way to Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations as Best Foreign Language Film, as well as an Oscar nod for Best Song ("Look To Your Path [Vois Sur Ton Chemin]," a collaboration between the director and film composer Bruno Coulais). Taking his inspiration from the boy's chorus at the center of the film's drama, Coulais has concocted a masterful, classically rooted score that showcases the crystalline, youthful harmonies of Les Petits Chanteurs de Saint-Marc Choir. The composer bridges the baroque and modern eras in a collection of mostly Latin choruses and chants, a skillful, often haunting fusion that also netted Coulais' compelling score BAFTA and Cesar Awards in Britain and his native France, respectively. -- Jerry McCulley
-------------
The Chorus (Les Choristes), written and directed by Christophe Barratier, is already a French cinema phenomenon. The modestly budgeted film about a music teacher in a post-war France who wins over the troubled students at a boarding school arrived in French theatres last summer with little advance hype. Defying industry expectations, this affecting tale proceeded to break box-office records. The soundtrack to The Chorus (Les Choristes) features performers by the Lyon-based Petits Chanteurs de Saint Marc and several haunting solo turns by 13 year-old boy soprano Jean-Baptiste Maunier, who also portrays the youthful protagonist of the film.

Tyranny of the Beat: Original Soundtracks From the Grey Area (1990)
The Tyranny of the Beat: Original Soundtracks From the Grey Area is, essentially, the secret history of Mute Records (via subsidiary The Grey Area). The title may indicate dance music, but the "beat" here comes closer to industrial than techno. As Biba Kopf's liner notes state, "Beat presently imposes itself as the martial law controlling all expression. Music is now only music if legitimized by Beat. And the dancehall represents society under disco lockdown." Although many familiar names are included, the tracks are rarely the most obvious. For instance, instead of, say, the oft covered "Mother Sky," Can is represented by "Oh Yeah" (1971). Instead of "Ex Lion Tamer" or "Strange" (both from seminal recording Pink Flag), Wire is represented by a live version of "Our Swimmer" (1979). And so it goes with the rest of the selections on this 17-track sampler. Consequently, quite a few of them are now hard to find elsewhere. Many of the top British, German, and Australian noise merchants from the 1970s and '80s are present and accounted for. This includes such interesting side projects as Dome (featuring Graham Lewis and Bruce Gilbert from Wire) and the Boys Next Door (Nick Cave's pre-Birthday Party outfit). Those with an interest in experimental and electronic music could do worse than to track down these soundtracks for imaginary movies or the klix video companion of the same name, which features nine of the same artists (ten on the U.S. version). ~ Kathleen C. Fennessy, All Music Guide

Mishima: A Life In Four Chapters (1985 Film) [Philip Glass]

http://rapidshare.de/files/15271448/Phi ... ishima.rar
Writer-director Paul Schrader's films are always as memorable for their music as they are for their visuals--sometimes more so. Think of Giorgio Moroder's synthesizers pulsing through Cat People; think of Blondie's anthem for American Gigolo; think of Scott Johnson's remarkable score for Patty Hearst--and think of the full suite of music composed by Philip Glass for Schrader's ode to the deeply conflicted Japanese novelist Yukio Mishima. With its gilded, impressionistic set and its plot-eschewing cinematic vision, Mishima depended upon Glass's compositions for grounding. Despite the Japanese setting, the music is pan-global, typical of Glass's genre-absorbing minimalist style. A standout track is "Osamu's Theme," which features a catchy rock & roll guitar part against a string setting. And the album's quartets feature none other than the Kronos Quartet. --Marc Weidenbaum
