ABSOLUte Beginner - Hammerhart

http://youtube.com/watch?v=7w__AQBp_tQ

Ooh-Na-Na... mmmhbambule... yees-yo... dies is Hamburg-City callin
Is ja hammerhart
Da is' einiges am Start ...

Viele wollen chatten und rappen von Hamburg bis Meppen
bauen Tracks in Ketten, wollen ohne Rucksack tracken

Is ja hammerhart
Da is' einiges am Start ...

Tennisstar

Creative Rock - Gorilla (1973 German Heavy Progressive)

Image

Personnel:
· KLAUS WEBER g, perc
· RAINER ERBEL v
· BENNY STREMMEL sax, flt
· HUBERTUS KREUTNER tpt, flugelhorn
· GUNTER SCHNEIDE g, b
· MICHAEL MAAS b, g
· HEIKO STEINSIEK d

ALBUMS:
"Gorilla" (Brain 1017) 1973
"Lady Pig" (Brain 1074) 1974

Creative Rock - an ambitious name, but they were merely a quite conventional jazz-rock fusion septet. Possible inspirational sources were Chicago, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Nucleus and particularly Colloseum. Creative Rock added their own Teutonic slant, though. Gorilla (1973) was a good album with eight tracks produced by Konrad Plank at Windrose studios, Hamburg. Instrumentally the album contained equal amounts of brass and guitars. Lady Pig (1974) was basically more of the same, although by now Creative Rock were beginning to run out of ideas. Consequently the band broke up. These two green Brain releases have never been re-issued. Anyway, the demand for them is not too great and they can still be acquired at about 35 DEM each.

WALLENSTEIN - COSMIC CENTURY (1973)

Image

JURGEN DOLLASE kb
HARALD GROSSKOPF d
DIETER MEIER b
BILL BARONE g
JOACHIM REISER vln
Wallenstein were one of Germany's best known "space rock" bands, clearly indebted to Pink Floyd but also developing a personal style of their own. Jurgen Dollase founded the group Blitzkrieg as an international group with Bill Barone (from the USA), Jerry Berkers (from the Netherlands) and Harald Grosskopf (from Germany!). Dollase had previously studied art and classical music. In late Autumn 1971 Blitzkrieg had the repertoire ready for an album, but as a British group already was using the name "Blitzkrieg", the German group changed their name to Wallenstein and kept Blitzkrieg as the title of their first album. This featured four very long tracks in a symphonic progressive rock style (all written by Dollase) and almost completely instrumental. Dense, complex and powerful stuff!
Mother Universe (1972) pictured Dollase's grandma on the sleeve acting as the grandmother of our universe. Musically this was a more dynamic album, introducing some quieter, folky passages with acoustic guitar between the more usual powerful and pompous electric guitar and organ outbursts. Jerry Berkers wanted to do more of these folky things, and quit Wallenstein to record his own solo album Unterwegs - which musically I find it to be in a rather dull singer & songwriter tradition. After Dollase and Grosskopf had taken part in the large scale projects Lord Krishna von Goloka (Sergius Golowin), Tarot (Walter Wegmuller) and the Cosmic Jokers-sessions, they recorded Cosmic Century (1973) in September 1973. This album brought another change of style, clearly influenced by Dollase's recent "cosmic" experiences. It was marketed as the first album by the 'symphonic rock orchestra Wallenstein' (text on the sleeve). It consisted of five refined symphonic rock tracks and a short piano piece. Dollase's strained vocal parts lowered the overall standard of this album, but apart from this the music was good! Sadly this was to be their last great album...
Stories, Songs & Symphonies (1975) attempted to bring in more conventional rock and jazz styles for a kind of extended fusion, but was largely an artistic failure. Only their adaptation of Bartok's music on "Symphaty for Bela Bartok" was of much interest. The rest represented Dollase's failed attempts to be a serious singer-songwriter. Wallenstein split in 1975 and Bill Barone returned to the USA. Harald Grosskopf was engaged as the drummer for Klaus Schulze, Ashra and more recently Central Europe Performance.

KRAAN - KRAAN (1972)

Image

PETER WOLBRANDT g
JOHANNES "ALTO" PAPPERT sax
INGO BISCHOF kb B
HELMUT HATTLER b
JAN FRIDE d

The name Kraan was short, concise and meant absolutely nothing. Still the band was to become one of the most important and stylistically characteristic German jazz-rock bands of the seventies. Kraan was formed in Ulm (south of Stuttgart) in 1970. All members had their backgrounds in free jazz bands. Johannes "Alto" Pappert on his side had a passion for soul, but came to Kraan directly from a rock band. Their debut album was recorded in May 1972 and later released on Spiegelei in a colourful fold-out sleeve. It contained their basic live repertoire at the time (and also favourites for years to come) like: "Kraan Arabia" (a cunning jazz trip into Eastern music) "Sarah's Ritt Durch den Schwarzwald" and "Head" (an 18 minute long improvisation). A remarkable album, it was recorded in just three days at Studio 70, Munich. Instrumentally it was well-balanced between Pappert, Wolbrandt and the klix bass-work of Hattler, then just 20 years old but already a master of his instrument.
The two following albums, Wintrup (1973) and Andy Nogger (1974), were similar in style. They sold quite well, even gaining a release in the States. In those days, Kraan toured Germany a lot and were renowned for their great performances full of improvisations. The excitement of a Kraan concert was caught perfectly on Live (1975) - one of the best German live albums of all time! Improved versions of many of their old songs were included with extended solos. The album was recorded at Quartier Latin in Berlin in September 1974.
In 1975 Kraan made two tours in the United Kingdom and also appeared at the Danish Roskilde festival in July, now adding a fifth member: Ingo Bischof. He had previously been a member of Karthago. Let It Out (1975) proved to be a disappointment (for the band as well) and Bischof left at the end of the year. After one German tour and a third UK tour Pappert also left in August 1976 to go solo.

MORPHEUS - RABENTEUER (1976)

Image

Peter Blömeke (bass, flute, percussion)
Gerold Adler (guitar, effects)
Heinrich Holtgreve (alto sax, percussion)
Alfred Franke (drums, percussion)

Morpheus from Warburg / Germany was a band playing progressive jazz-rock without vocals. They were formed from the former band Opossum, founded in 1971 and who΄s LP will be probably released later on this label. The only LP of Morpheus is from 1976 and consist all of own compositions, which were worked out in detail. It was highly important for the band to try syncopated rhythms, sound shapes made up by means of echos and to fit them all into their tracks.

MICHAEL ROTHER - FLAMMENDE HERZEN (1977)

Image

The German guitarist Michael Rother was born in Hamburg in 1950. He started his career in the revolutionary krautrock scene at the beginning of the seventies. In 1971, he first appeared in KRAFTWERK during their debut in embryonic electronic rock exploration. The same year until 1975 he integrated the band NEU! in duo with Klaus Dinger. They released three seminal, innovative works together, participating to a new step in the development of German rock. Just before starting his career in solo he was employed by Roedelius (Cluster) to collaborate to Harmonia’s wonderful motoric/pre-ambient project.
In 1976, Michael Rother recorded his first album in solo “Flammende Herzen” with Jackie Liebezeit (CAN) on drums. It was produced by the famous sound engineer Conny Plank. The music is in the direct inspiration of Neu! contemplative side (“Seeland” from Neu! 75 for instance). Michael Rother experiments his guitar playing in a floating, introspect-minimal expression, always accompanied by mechanical drum pulses (Jaki Liebezeit). The music is less experimental than Neu! or Kraftwerk and stresses the emotional, dreamy-like dimensions. This is a relaxed, accessible album with inventive and sunny guitar lines. His second album “Sterntaler” (1977) follows the main ideas, constantly using simplistic and efficient motifs. His two following efforts “Katzenmusik” (1979) and “Fernwärme (1982) also reveal Michael Rother’s typical guitar signature, using the same musical ingredients as motorik minimal grooves, affective & effective guitar solos...
In 1980, Michael Rother obtained his own musical studio. The fifth solo album “Lust” will be produced by Rother himself. With continuous ideas he put the stress on new materials and technology. Less inspired he will have difficulties to renew his musical genre. In 1993, he found the Random Records label where will be reissued all his discography. Recently he has collaborated with Dieter Moebius for many concerts in Europe, providing nice electronic/ ambient guitar compositions.

ARMAGGEDON - ARMAGGEDON (1970)

Image

FRANK DIEZ v, g
MANFRED GALATIK kb, b, v
MICHAEL NURNBERG b, g
JURGEN LORENZEN d

Why didn't this group record more than just one album? Their self-titled album is a heavy progressive masterpiece with excellent, Hendrix-influenced guitar work and vocals by Frank Diez. Armageddon was the start of his long and impressive career. Their album had six tracks, and two of them were cover versions. Most impressive was the 10 minute version of Jeff Beck Group's "Rice Pudding". This track had some of the greatest heavy guitar riffing to appear on a German record. Their version of Spooky Tooth's "Better By You, Better Than Me" was also competent enough. In addition, both Frank Diez and Manfred Galatik wrote great songs, as typified by the tracks "People Talking" and "Open". Michael Nurnberg and Jurgen Lorenzen provided a strong backing. Armageddon's album has rocketed in price during recent years, due to the ever increasing interest. However, demand for the group was poor way back in 1970, and Armaggedon soon broke up. Diez never played material with a similar energy again, his next step was to join the 'slightly-above-average' jazz-rockers Emergency.

NEUSCHWANSTEIN - BATTLEMENT (1978)

Image

Thomas Neuroth - Keyboards
Klaus Mayer - Flute, Synthesizer
Roger Weiler - Guitars
Frederic Joos - Lead Vocals, Acoustic Guitar
Rainer Zimmer - Bass; Vocal on (5)
Hans-Peter Schwarz - Drums (except 1)
Hermann Rarebell - Drums (1)

Neuschwanstein was such a band, the embryonic form of the band originally making their mark in a musical competition in Saarbrucken, Germany. The band won the competition with a progressive rock adaptation of Lewis Carroll's Alice In Wonderland in 1974. That same year Neuschwanstein took on two guitarist/singers from the French band Lykorn, and with that addition, the band that would record Battlement was in place. From 1974 to 1978 the band would make a name for themselves in the Saarland region of Germany and France, opening many shows for the likes of Novalis and Lucifer's Friend. By 1978 the band booked themselves into Scorpions producer Dieter Dierks studio, one of the finest in Germany. With the help of Scorpions drummer Hermann Rarebell, who played drums for the band on the track "Loafer Jack," the band recorded the material that would be released on Battlement. It was released in 1979 and sold a respectable 6000 copies, quite an accomplishment for an unsigned band on an independent label before the heyday of the internet.Re-released on Musea in 1992, Battlement is a beautiful, lush work, and one of the best produced and sounding independently recorded releases . The musicianship displayed on Battlement is absolutely top notch and vocalist/acoustic guitarist Frederic Joos will have many listeners swearing that Peter Gabriel himself provided the lead vocals for Neuschwanstien. The band's material is all stunning and well polished, reminiscent of Genesis during the time of Trick Of The Tail and Wind And Wuthering. Their music is well conceived and very well executed, with rich and melodious keyboards and guitar, beautiful flute breaks and very, very finely delivered vocals.
