After that, he commanded motorized rifle divisions in Yekaterinburg and Chechnya, from 2005 to 2008 he was First Deputy Commander of the 20th Guards Combined Arms Army, from April to November 2008 he served as Commander. From 2008 to 2010, he headed the Main Operational Directorate of the General Staff, then was the first deputy commander of the troops of the Central Military District, and then the Eastern Military District. In 2013, he became the commander of the troops of the Eastern Military District.

From March to December 2017 and from January to April 2019, he led a group of troops in Syria. Since October 31, 2017, he has headed the Aerospace Forces.
