Ukrainian troops report interruptions in the operation of Starlink communication devices on the front line, which complicates the work of the Ukrainian military to liberate the territories.
Financial Times notes that thousands of Starlink terminals manufactured by Elon Musk's SpaceX company were purchased by the US government and funded by crowdfunding to help Ukrainian troops operate drones, obtain important intelligence and communicate with each other in areas where there are no other secure networks, as well as provide internet for Ukrainians.
According to a senior Ukrainian government official, some of these interruptions have led to a "catastrophic" loss of communication in recent weeks. Many of them were recorded during the military's breakthrough of the front line into the territory occupied by Russia, and some during the fighting. These cases were most acute in the south in Kherson and Zaporizhia regions, but also occurred along the front line in the east, in Kharkiv, Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
Another Kiev official noted that communication interruptions were widespread and led to panic calls from the military to hotlines. Both Ukrainian officials said problems arose when the military liberated territory from Russia and crossed the front line.
Roman Sinitsyn, coordinator of the Serhiy Prytula Charitable Foundation, which transfers Starlink systems to the Ukrainian armed forces, believes that the problem could have arisen because SpaceX is trying to prevent Russian forces from using Starlink inappropriately. According to him, the outages are taking place in areas whose liberation "has not yet become public."
Three service members working on the front lines confirmed that their Starlink systems had stopped working during the fighting. However, two other Ukrainian military sources said earlier this week that their Starlink systems were operating in the recently liberated area east of Izyum and in the south of the Kherson region. Two Western officials said they were aware of the shutdown but declined further comment.
