Indija je šokirana najkrvavijim obračunom s kinom u posljednjih 60 godina u kojem je ubijeno 20 indijskih vojnika. Iako su u početku saopćili o pogibiji trojice i ranjavanju 17 vojnika, indijske su vlasti kasnije priznale kako su svi izgubili živote. Kineska strana je dala malo informacija o incidentu, no čini se da njihovi mediji javljaju kako je bilo i njihovih žrtava.

Incident se dogodio u dolini rijeke Galwan, visoko na Himalaji; području za kojeg su Indijci vjerovali da su ga Kinezi napustili. Do sukoba je došlo kada je indijska patrola neočekivano naišla na kinesku. Potom su se dvije vojske upustile u bespoštedno šaketanje te udaranje palicama i kamenjem, s obzirom na to da upravo zbog bojazni od eskalacije nasilja ne nose oružje.
