LOBBY LOYDE AND THE COLOURED BALLS - FIRST SUPPER LAST (1972)

Originally intended to be called 'Rock Your Arse Off' when it was recorded in 1972, this was not released until 1976. Although it was the first album the Coloured Balls recorded it was the fourth and last released. The reason it took four years from recording to release is that the album was considered too uncommercial at the time for record companies to put it out. Another example of the difficulty Aussie bands had in getting their product out without having to compromise their artistic integrity. Ironically, this is the only Coloured Balls album that has been officially reissued on CD, it was coupled in a double pack with Lobby's solo album 'Obsecration'. However, the packaging makes no mention of the names of either albums so it slipped past a lot of people.

The tracks have been described as 'ragged' and the production is deliberately harsh. I think that this adds to the excitement and the energy that was captured in the grooves. Listening to this your can almost smell the sweat running off the bands collective brows.

If like full on, take no prisoners, noisy guitar led hard rock with a bit of boogie thrown in and very few soft spots then your are going to like this.

RED HOT PEPPERS - BRIGHT RED (1977)

The Red Hot Peppers are no relation to the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. The Red Hot Peppers were originally formed in NZ, disbanded and later reformed in Australia. This album displays an amalgam of music styles including country, folk, jazz, swing, big band and even a bit of prog. Although not a band that had much of a profile at the time, this album is extremely polished and although eclectic has some very nice moments.

LIZARD - BAD COMPANIONS (1973)

Another one album band, Lizard was one of EMIs Harvest label Australian signings. Bad Companions is a very rare album full of 70s progressive jazz rock.

A five piece band, three of Lizards members were earlier in White Wine. Prior to Lizard, sax player Dave Connors also appeared in Jade Warrior (UK) and later went to work with Graham Parker and the Rumour.

There are moments on Bad Companions that remind me of Company Caine so it no surprise to learn that both Connors and guitarist/vocalist Mike Tulk also sessioned on Gulliver Smith's solo album.

THINK – WE’LL GIVE YOU A BUZZ (1976)

Winners of New Zealand’s battle of the band contest, Think recorded one album on Atlantic records. The band comprised Kiwis Richard Pickett (vocals), Alan Badger (bass), Phil Whitehead (guitar and one time member of Human Instinct), Don Mills (keyboards), and Neville Jess (drums). While the band is described in some circles as heavy metal/prog the album is a bit too restrained to be considered heavy metal. However, it is a great prog rock album with lots of keyboard, guitar, mood shifts and isn’t afraid to include some memorable hooks in songs. For a prog rock album it is very accessible so don’t expect any serious ‘head’ music. The only negative is that some of the lyrics sometimes miss the mark. Highly recommended.

MASTERS APPRENTICES - A TOAST TO PANAMA RED (1972)

The follow-up to Choice Cuts and the live Nicklodean, this was the last Masters Apprentices album until they released the disappointing 80s reunion album 'Do What You Wanna Do'.
Made under the influence of the reference in the title this album is consistently excellent. From gentle acoustic guitar led songs through to heavy rock influences and some spacey moments this album is just one highlight after another. Opening with the "Answer Lies Beyond through to the prophetic "Thyme to Rhyme" (with the lyric line "now that it's over") the album is a wonderful listening experience that should not be missed.
Given the strength of this and Choice Cuts, one can only wonder how good the next album would have been if the band had of stayed together.
A classic progressive rock album this is a must have for any fan of the genre.

PIRANA - PIRANA(1971) + PIRANA II (1972)

Pirana were another early Santana influenced progressive rock band. While some songs are derivative there is a lot that the band brings to the mix. While guitar is modelled on the sound of Carlos Santana, these are impressive progressive albums that are much sought after by collectors. Please note that this is not an official reissue as I thought it was when I purchased it.

CHALICE - OVERFLOW (1975)

Chalice were an English band that migrated to Australia in the early 70s. They produced one album of polished pop/rock with the occasional rural/country moments and a handful of singles. Produced by John English, Overflow is half originals and half cover versions of artists including Seals and Crofts, 70s Beach Boys, Dominic Triano, and Mac Davis, which is fairly reflective of Chalice's style. Ripped from vinyl.
