Will this soundtrack do for Ethiopian composer and musician Mulatu Astatke what Titanic did for Celine Dion? Well...maybe on a much, much smaller scale. Astatke's circle of Western fans has already expanded thanks to the compilation Ethiopiques, Vol. 4: Ethio Jazz & Musique Instrumentale, 1969-¬1974, and Jim Jarmusch's movie puts his hypnotic instrumentals to great use. This isn't surprising, since Jarmusch is a filmmaker with a natural affinity for music and its use onscreen. Here, a three-minute excerpt from stoner-rock legend Sleep's titanic "Dopesmoker" only offers a sample of the song (it actually lasts an hour) but it still sounds awesome, especially stuck between an Astatke track and Gabriel Fauré's "Requiem, Op. 48 (Pie Jesu)." Garage vets the Greenhornes and Holly Golightly contribute tracks together and separately, while indie-rockers Brian Jonestown Massacre's "Not If You Were the Last Dandy on Earth" (an answer song to the Dandy Warhols' "Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth") sounds as bilious now as it did in 1997. This is a rare case of a soundtrack that pulls together a broad range of artists yet remains oddly consistent--no doubt because it was assembled by a director with vision instead of a focus group. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Basquiat (1996)

Few film soundtracks capture the essence or personality of their subject matter as beautifully as the collection of songs culled from Basquiat. Jean Michel Basquiat's charisma was based in the many facets of his character and his art, and there's a song here for a good portion of his ever-changing moods. "Public Image," by PiL is a cynical sneer matching Basquiat's own disillusionment over his fame. The inclusion of the undulating rap/funk masterpiece "White Lines" by Grandmaster Flash, plays almost like a cautionary tale, while the hopelessness of Joy Division's "These Days" seems like a theme for the bleak emotional state the painter sometimes experienced. There are, of course, songs that reflect the period of Basquiat's rise from the '70s until his untimely death in the '80s. --Steve Gdula

As a composer of music for film, I have had the opportunity to score a wide variety of films from the sweeping studio epic to the intimate independent drama and they all have presented unique challenges. I have found over the years however, that the more money that is tied up in a film, the more requests there are for the composer to make safer choices and for the composer to present the more predictable options to the filmmakers. Thus my continuing interest in working in the world of independent filmmaking.
When I read Paul’s script for "Crash", I was immediately inspired to write for this film. The intricate plot, so masterfully woven around the wonderfully drawn characters, demanded a uniquely beautiful score. And in this case, this complete lack of financial resources, with which one could have resorted to the "tried and true" formulas of "successful film scoring", turned out to be a huge blessing.

Many composers start off their careers in "the bedroom" so to speak; in a small room, with their cherished equipment, building their music piece by piece, single handedly. For this score I returned to "the bedroom" and forced myself to find new and refreshing solutions to the challenge of writing this music. I am very proud of this score and sincerely hope that you, the audience, find it as engaging to listen to as I did to compose, and that through this album you can appreciate the beauty of this wonderfully crafted film.

Director Tim Burton's adaptation of author Daniel Wallace's bittersweet Southern Gothic novel has been billed as his first mainstream character drama, a notion that conveniently ignores the story's inherent fables and flights of imagination. But composer Danny Elfman understands their every dark nook and murky cranny with this magical, often deftly understated score. While the epic melodrama of his comic book scores (Batman, Spider-Man, The Hulk, et. al.) have made him a mainstream Hollywood music star, longtime fans know that the composer's true emotional range is seldom tapped as well as it is working with longtime collaborator Burton. ubuduce ce linkovi za pojedine albume biti sakriveni.
ukoliko ne uspijete da vidite link za odredjeni album to znaci da se link nalazi sakriven u onom uokvirenom dijelu...tamo gdje su prikazi albuma. ako ga i tada ne ugledate, to znaci da je fajl presvucen u bijelo. dakle neophodno je da osjencite, taj dio.

na ovaj potez sam prinudjen radi toga sto je ova tema postala zaista prevelika. cini mi se da dnevno ima vise od hiljadu posjeta. problem nastaje kada se linkovi sa ove teme prebacuju na razlicite, i to vrlo posjecene, mp3 blogove i druge forume. u principu, ja nemam problem sto se linkovi preuzimaju sa ove teme i obajavljuju na drugim mjestima, na koncu, i sama ova tema funkcionise na istom principu.
medjutim, problem nastaje onda kada se fajlovi sa limitiranim brojem DL prenose sa ove teme na druga mjesta. limit biva brzo potrosen, fajlovi precesto izbrisani, itd.itd.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)

With his soundtrack for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Jon Brion has carefully crafted music every bit as quirky (and fascinating) as the movie itself. As he did with Magnolia and Punch Drunk Love, Brion has made a varied score filled with odd instrumentation, infectious melodies, and at least one or two near-perfect pop songs. Best of all, these offbeat tracks compliment the movie incredibly well, and stand on their own as great listening. Mood-wise, this soundtrack is all over the map: "Row" is a simple, haunting piano solo; the movie's opening theme sounds like the austere and melancholic notes of an antique music box; while the strings on "Drive In" are playful and inquisitive. Even the non-instrumental tracks are gems: Beck's "Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometime" and Brion's "Strings That Tie You" rank among these artists' best songs. A handful of well-chosen tracks from E.L.O., the Polyphonic Spree, and the Willowz rounds out this thought provoking disc. A gem. --Jason Verlinde

Ghost in the Shell - Stand Alone Complex (2004) [Yoko Kanno]

Since the advent of electronic music, we've been culturally conditioned to associate techno with the future (as what I think). Yoko uses this to her advantage, combining that concept with guitar based rock'n'roll or Russian choral variations to create something familiar yet different enough to sound as thought it had originated in our future. Her production of this album is flawless !! She manages to effortlessly maintain the continuity of her particular compositional style without creating schlocky, ham-fisted house and electronica music.

Part of what keeps each track sounding fresh is Yoko's collaboration with different lyricists and vocalists. Lyricist Troy and singer Ilaria Graziano combine their talents and create other-worldly vocalizations of dreamscapes over a pulsing electronic beat. Tim Jensen works with such diverse singers a Hide, Scott Matthew and Origa to create more rock'n'roll based pieces that convey a sense of post-modern angst.

And Origa, best known for her performance on the opening track, Inner Universe. Lovely track <3 Along with Shanti Snyder, they have composed a haunting and transcendent lyric, a perfect accompaniment to Yoko Kanno's beautiful thumping electronic score. This song truly encapsulates the beauty of the animation, the genius of the storylines and the zeitgeist of the world of tomorrow. I'm mean sure the anime itself is a bit dull, but can be seen STILL as a masterpiece.
