Avalon Theatre Company
Announces 2007 – 2008 Season
ST. LOUIS (April 11, 2007) – Avalon Theatre Company announces its third season, two plays that realize its vision to “share St. Louis with itself”: BUS STOP, an American classic by William Inge, October 12 – 21, 2007 (preview October 11) directed by Peter Mayer, and LITTLE BOSNIA, a new play by St. Louis playwright Cristina Pippa, which explores a contemporary American dream, April 11-20, 2008 (preview April 10) directed by Avalon Artistic Director, Larry Mabrey. Both productions will perform at Union United Methodist Church, 3543 Watson Road.
LITTLE BOSNIA, inspired by interviews with Bosnian refugees and their families overseas, is an original piece about the St. Louis Bosnian community written by St. Louis playwright, Cristina Pippa. LITTLE BOSNIA will feature original music by Dan Rubright and a blended cast of St. Louis theatre professionals and professional artists from the St. Louis Bosnian community, one of the fastest growing cultural groups in our city. Faris is about to graduate from college and start his American dream when he learns that he must return to Bosnia to reclaim his family’s apartment from a Croat (Catholic) woman. It is not until he sees Bosnia as an adult, after the war, still marked with beauty and injustice—and until he returns to the United States—that he discovers exactly who he is and who he wants to be.
Season subscription prices are: $45 adult; $35 student/senior. Single ticket prices are: $25 adult; $20 student/senior; $15 preview (first Thursday of the run). Group rates are available for groups of 10 or more. Performances are Thursdays, Fridays, & Saturdays @ 8:00 pm; Sundays @ 3:00 pm. For more information and to make convenient ticket purchases online, visit Avalon’s website: http://www.avalontheatre.org. Reservations may also be made by calling 314-351-6482.
Avalon Theatre Company fosters opportunities for the St. Louis professional theatre artist and focuses on socially relevant and timely plays and lesser-produced musicals. Founded in 2005, ATC operates under a Small Professional Theatre contract with Actors’ Equity Association, the union of professional actors and stage managers in the United States, and is organized as a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit corporation. Avalon received three 2006 Kevin Kline Award nominations for excellence in St. Louis professional theatre and is proud to receive support from Fox Associates Foundation and the Regional Arts Commission.

U 1972. godini, vodeća struktura građevinske industrije u St.Louis-u organizovala je PRIDE u St.Louis - prva američka volonterska organizacija za radnu snagu i menadžment - Productivity and Responsibility Increase Development and Employment (produktivnost i porast razvojne odgovornosti i zaposlenost).

Call for Entries: Water Works
http://www.pulitzerarts.org
Cinema St. Louis and the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts invite St. Louis-area filmmakers to project their imaginations on the Pulitzer building by creating short silent films that employ water as a key element.
In conjunction with the upcoming exhibit "Water," which opens July 20, the Pulitzer will hold an event in September 2007 that features locally created, water-related short films. These "water works" will be digitally projected on several exterior surfaces at the Pulitzer Foundation.
Cinema St. Louis will then choose one of the films to screen as part of the AT&T St. Louis International Film Festival, held from Nov. 8-18, 2007. The film will be part of a silent-film program and receive live musical accompaniment.
"Water" Exhibit Info
This exhibition engages the prevalence of water in the Pulitzer building and addresses the range of responses that water has elicited from modern and contemporary artists. Works will be exhibited in relation to the building's prominent watercourt and the space itself, which was conceived by Tadao Ando as a fluid substance directed by walls. Specific juxtapositions within the exhibition will encourage the visitors to think about the artwork in different and unexpected ways. Artists include Alvar Aalto, Max Beckmann, Robert Gober, Roni Horn, Roy Lichtenstein, Richard Long, Henri Matisse, Claes Oldenburg, Cy Twombly, and more.
Contest Details
St. Louis-area filmmakers interested in participating must create silent shorts that meet the following three criteria:
Incorporate water as an important aspect of the work.
Run a maximum of 5 minutes (no minimum running time).
Exclude ALL sound, including music, effects and dialogue.
Experimental, narrative, animated, and documentary approaches are all acceptable. The shorts can be shot in any film or video format, in either color or black-and-white.
Filmmakers must live within a 120-mile radius of St. Louis.
All films must be submitted on DVD.
There is no entry fee. Deadline is Aug. 31, 2007.
Submission of a short does not guarantee its use at the Pulitzer event.
To view the Pulitzer building, visit the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts Web site at http://www.pulitzerarts.org.
For more information, call Cinema St. Louis at 314-289-4150
DVD and entry form should be sent to: Cinema St. Louis, Attention: Water Works, Centene Center for Arts & Education, 3547 Olive St., St. Louis, MO 63103-1014.

Evo nama Komsica u komsiluk cuo sam da planira ostati ovdje
Bosnian president to attend festival here
By Tim O'Neil
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
08/23/2007
The plan of Bosnia-Herzegovina's president to attend the St. Louis Bosnian heritage festival is a sign of the immigrant group's vitality here, local organizers say.
Zeljko Komsic, current chairman of Bosnia-Herzegovina's three-member presidency, is expected to arrive in St. Louis on Aug. 30 for a four-day visit that will include appearances at the fourth annual Bosnia and Herzegovina Festival. Komsic will speak at gatherings Aug. 30-31 and attend festival events over the Labor Day weekend in Carondelet Park in south St. Louis.
Leaders of the local Bosnian community announced those details Wednesday. The festival also will include a soccer tournament Sept. 1-2 for teams from across North America, a chess tournament and a one-day gathering of food, music and booths in the park near Boat House Lake on Sunday, Sept. 2.
Ibrahim Vajzovic, acting head of the sponsoring United Bosnian Association of St. Louis, said Komsic's visit is a great honor for Bosnian-Americans here and a chance to show the home country that Bosnians of all religious affiliations can prosper peacefully.
An estimated 40,000 or more Bosnian-Americans live in the metro area, mostly in south St. Louis and south St. Louis County. Most arrived during the early 1990s as refugees from the civil war in the old Yugoslavia. The community is regarded as the largest outside Bosnia itself.
"We have established a large, sustainable community," Vajzovic said. "We have our children in the schools, we own businesses. If you go to a bank, our people work there. We have succeeded here in America. We want to show that people can live together."
Although most local Bosnians are Muslims, Komsic's visit will include a stop at St. Joseph Croatian Catholic Church in Soulard. Komsic is Catholic.
This will be the second visit to St. Louis by a president of Bosnia-Herzegovina. A former president, Sulejman Tihic, made a one-day visit here in September 2004. But Vajzovic and other leaders said Komsic's visit will be much more extensive.
Komsic will speak Aug. 30 to the World Affairs Council of St. Louis at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Clayton. On Aug. 31, he is among speakers scheduled at a dinner at Orlando Gardens in Lemay honoring the 10th anniversary of Sabah, a Bosnian-American weekly newspaper that moved to the Bevo neighborhood from New York in 2005. Komsic also is expected to meet area political leaders, including Mayor Francis Slay and St. Louis County Executive Charlie Dooley.

Bosnian President Visits St. Louis
Created: 8/30/2007 11:25:56 PM
By Jeff Small
(KSDK) - St. Louis is hosting Bosnian president Zeljko Komsic this weekend as part of the Bosnian Heritage Festival
Komsic will have a lot of local support in the Gateway City, as 40,000 Bosnians -- the largest population outside the country itself -- call the St. Louis area home.
This weekend's arrival represents only the second time St. Louis has played host to a Bosnian president. In 2004, Sulejman Tihic made a one-day visit to the city.
Local Bosnian-Americans like Adnan Sabic said the impact of the dignitary's rare visit is huge.
"It is nice that they come so we can make connections with them and maybe they can learn from us and we can learn from them," Sabic said.
The Bevo Mill neighborhood in south St. Louis City is where the heaviest concentration of local Bosnians are found.
Many of the residents and business owners said they hope to share their success stories with the Bosnian president.
"We want to open up Bosnia to foreign investment and we think St. Louis is a good place to start because so many Bosnians live here and are successful," said Ibrahim Vajzovic, acting head of the United Bosnian Association of St. Louis.
On Thursday night, hundreds of local Bosnians gathered at the Ritz-Carlton in Clayton for a World Affairs Council dinner at which Komsic was the guest of honor.
Komsic and his delegation will attend several events during this weekend's festival at Carondelet Park in St. Louis.

Upstream Theater presents the world premiere of Return of the Bedbug October 26-28 and November 1-4 and 8-11, 2007.
Upstream Theater is pleased to present a new play Return of the Bedbug by Philip Boehm, inspired by Vladimir Mayakovsky’s The Bedbug. Performances are October 26-28, November 1-4 and 8-11 at 305 S. Skinker Blvd. (at Fauquier between Clayton and Wydown). All shows are at 8 PM except Sundays at 7 PM. Mayakovsky’s 1929 satire portrayed a roguish wheeler-dealer frozen at that time and unfrozen fifty years later, in a future world that proved to have little room for him and even less understanding. Return of the Bedbug uses a similar conceit to show a man in the Soviet Union of the mid 1980s who is frozen in time and wakes up some twenty years later in the United States of America. A comically grotesque study of one man caught in a clash of cultures.
Starring J. Samuel Davis as Prisypkin, with Briston Ashe, Kari Ely, Joe Hanrahan, Don McClendon, Jane Paradise, and Carl Overly, Jr. Live music by Farshid Soltanshahi (some nights with Ali Bazargani). Onscreen cameos by Carrie Houk and Laurie McConnell. Directed by Philip Boehm. Set design by Igor Karash. Costumes by Julia Graham. Lighting by Patrick Huber. Video production by Bobby Miller.
Tickets are $20, $18 for seniors, and $15 for students. Special group discounts available. For reservations please call 863-4999 or email [email protected].
