2011 Wimbledon Preview – Men’s Singles
Sure 2011 is being a wonderful year for men’s tennis. From mid-2005 to the end of 2010, the ATP circuit was almost exclusively dominated by two players: Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, two players who will obligatory be in the GOAT discussion due to their insane results. However, the 2011 season put an end to “Fedal” domination, however I believe on grass, it is still a two-horse race for now…
The Contenders
Rafael Nadal:This isn’t being an easy season for Rafael Nadal, however the Spanish player is showing why he is so mentally strong and under tremendous pressure from Djokovic’s hot streak, Nadal was able to keep his cool and at least retain his beloved Roland Garros title. Rafa’s season hasn’t been easy and he has had some tremendous defeats along the way. It all started with a virus, which helped Davydenko to absolutely slaughtered him in Doha by 6-3 6-2. Then, an injury at the Australian Open, which allowed David Ferrer to beat him in straight sets in the Quarter Finals. After helping once again his country to advance a round in Davis Cup, he reached the final of both Indian Wells and Miami, losing both finals to Djokovic on details, especially in Miami, where the title was decided on a third set tie-break. Then, the clay court season began and Nadal’s domination started. Without Djokovic in the draw, Nadal easily conquered the titles in Monte Carlo and Barcelona, with just one set dropped. However, everything changed in Madrid and Rome, where Djokovic defeated him twice in the finals of these two tournaments. With his clay court dominated of several years in jeopardy, Nadal struggled big time in the first rounds of Roland Garros, but slowly got back to a good level, especially against Soderling and Murray. With Federer defeating Djokovic, Nadal took advantage of that and used his mental edge over Federer to defeat him on a very close match, where Federer didn’t play worse than Nadal. He simply crumbled when it mattered the most. Nadal immediately entered Queen’s, but his tiredness and lack of motivation to go far in the tournament was evident from early on, eventually losing to Tsonga in the quarter finals. On a surface where Djokovic struggles, Nadal has to be considered the main favorite to win the title once again. Not only he should beat Djokovic on grass due to past history of both players in this surface, as Nadal’s mental edge over Federer will make him a favorite in a potential match between the two on a Grand Slam, especially considering the last time Federer defeated Nadal on a Grand Slam was back in 2007! After a very tough start of the season, Nadal has regained his confidence with his win at Roland Garros and possesses everything to successfully defend his Wimbledon title this season.
Roger Federer: The 2011 season hasn’t been good for Roger Federer either. It started very well with a title in Doha, but then it all went downhill. A semi final in the Australian Open, a final in Dubai and two semi finals in Indian Wells would be great for a lot of players, but for Federer, it isn’t, especially when all defeats came at the hands of Djokovic and Nadal, with a set differential of 1-9 in those matches. Federer’s confidence surely took a tumble and that was evident with a shocking loss against Melzer in Monte Carlo. After some troubles in the early rounds of Madrid, he reached semi finals just to lose to Nadal, in a match where he played well at the beginning, just to slowly dropping his level for an easy win at the end against his main rival. Rome followed and a bad loss against Gasquet in the third round, in a match where Federer was up by a set and a break, just to lose 6-4 6-7 6-7. Things were looking bad for Federer at Roland Garros, but he surprised a lot of people by playing his best tournament in a while. Not only he didn’t drop a set on his first five matches, as he became the first player to defeat Djokovic this season. He went on to face Nadal in the final and as he seemed to get the quick upper hand early on, a mega choke followed and Federer mentally crumbled once again at the hands of Nadal on a big match. Now on grass, Federer has a shot of winning the whole thing if he plays as well as he played in Roland Garros. However, if he returns to his inconsistence and mental struggles from early-2011, don’t be surprised if he falls at the hands of a semi-top player like it happened last season against Berdych.
The Outsiders
Novak Djokovic: Fresh from a Davis Cup historic title for Serbia, he entered a massive streak, winning every match he played until he was stopped by Federer in the semi-finals of Roland Garros. It was a kind of domination that not even Federer and Nadal were capable of doing, clearly showing that they are three in the mix now in the fight for all the big titles. Djokovic won the Australian Open, Dubai, Indian Wells, Miami, Belgrade, Madrid and Rome. That’s one Grand Slam on hard court, two 1000 tournaments on hard court, two 1000 tournaments on clay, one 500 tournament on hard court and one 250 tournament on clay. Besides that, he was the first player in several years to beat Nadal on clay two consecutive matches, besides beating him also in both finals of Indian Wells and Miami. He also defeated Federer three times in the Australian Open, Dubai and Indian Wells with no much trouble, before falling to the same Federer in the semi finals of Roland Garros, in a match where Federer played his best clay court match in a long time, maybe even his match clay court match ever. It was necessary the best Federer for someone to finally defeat Djokovic in 2011. Surely, the Serbian is the best overall player of 2011. But does that make him the #1 favorite for Wimbledon? Nope. Djokovic has never performed very well on grass. He doesn’t feel very comfortable on the surface, especially when Federer, Nadal and Murray are like fish on water on the very same surface. Sure he reached semi finals last season, but he had a quite easy draw and once he got a good grass courter like Berdych in front of him, he suffered a clear defeat. Does he have a chance to win the tournament? Yes, but he’s not the favorite, as he would be on a hard court or even a clay court tournament. He will be the underdog in a match on grass against his main two rivals and the chances of someone winning Wimbledon without having to face either Nadal or Federer are slim to none.
Andy Murray: On every Grand Slam, some people believe that finally Andy Murray will get his first Grand Slam title. I don’t believe on him anymore, I’ll be honest. To win a Grand Slam, you need to be mentally very strong and defeat your own nerves in the final matches of the tournaments. Murray just can’t do it. After a nice start of the season, where he reached the final of the Australian Open, mainly thanks to a very easy draw, Murray was ridiculously bad in that final and after that, he completely lost his game. Three bad losses in a row to Baghdatis in Rotterdam, Young in Indian Wells and Bogomolov in Miami put Murray’s 4th place in the rankings in jeopardy if he couldn’t regroup in the clay court season, his worst surface by far. However, suddenly he regrouped and played his best clay court tennis of his career. Semi finals in Monte Carlo and Rome showed that he was in good form and that was confirmed in Roland Garros, where he reached semi finals for the first time on his career and put a nice effort against Nadal in that match, even though he was clearly physically hampered by some issues. Murray decided to play Queen’s, even though he wasn’t physically at 100% and after some struggles in the first rounds, he was able to win the tournament by narrowing defeating Tsonga in the final by 3-6 7-6 6-4. Murray sure has his chances to win Wimbledon on paper, especially if he gets drawn into Djokovic’s side of the draw. However, due to his nerves, I just don’t see him beating Federer or Nadal on a Grand Slam final, especially with all pressure from the British media on his shoulders. Sure he has a shot, but he is not a contender in my eyes, but one of the main outsiders if the two real contenders fail to show their favoritism in this tournament.
The second week contenders
Robin Soderling: Capable of committing a huge upset, however can you imagine someone winning Wimbledon with a horrible net game like Soderling possesses? Surely, he has a very good shot of going far, but I don’t see him getting past any of the four players currently in front of him in the rankings.
Tomas Berdych: The defending finalist always plays well in Wimbledon, but his season is being quite bad. In fact, he hasn’t been great since last year’s Wimbledon. But you never know with him. He may lose in the first round to some qualifier, as he may go all the way to another final.
Andy Roddick: Another player who has done very well in previous editions of this tournament, but who is struggling to find any kind of decent form this season. He was impressive early on in Queen’s, but then got trashed by Murray, a clear sign that he is far from the required level to beat the top players. However, with his serve and all his experience, this is a player nobody wants to face.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga: Sure he is a dangerous opponent, but no way he will be beating Nadal again in Wimbledon if the match happens. Of course, he has a big serve and a great net game, however his weak return game and his struggling movement will get exposed a lot by the top players. Don’t forget Wimbledon’s surface is much slower than Queen’s! Sure he will be dangerous, but I don’t see going into the semi finals of this tournament, for example.
Richard Gasquet: Very few players are as talented as Gasquet to play on grass. He has recently showed some good form and if he continues his good moment in Wimbledon, a top player will be needed to put him out of the tournament. I would say that he is the French player with more chances to go far in this tournament, even more than Tsonga!
Juan Martin Del Potro: His movement on grass is pathetic. He is barely a Top 15/20 player on the surface. But who wants to face him early in the tournament with his serve and huge ground strokes? Sure, he won’t be able to be as competitive as in the other surfaces, but be careful with him.
The positive surprises
David Ferrer:For the 100th time, he is not a pure clay courter! Of course, he is one of the best players on clay in the circuit, but his guy is an all-rounder, ready to do very well on every surface, grass included. No, he won’t be beating Federer or Nadal on grass, but unlike many people who will as always predict him to go out of the tournament very early, he will keep progressing in the draw until he finds a higher seeded player than him. And even if that happens, that higher seeded player better bring his A game! Don’t forget Ferrer reached 4th round last year and took Soderling to 5 sets, with the Swedish barely winning the match by 6-2 5-7 6-2 3-6 7-5. So, no he won’t be losing to [insert random ball basher ranked 40/50]. It will take much more than that to take Mr. Consistency out of the tournament.
Mardy Fish: Remember him? After an amazing season in 2010, Mardy Fish continues to play very well, however he is clearly going under the radar this time. Not only he keeps winning a lot on hardcourt, as he had a really good clay court season, which can only indicate that he is ready to put on some huge results on the fast surfaces really soon. I predict him to go far in the tournament and eventually make it to the second week with a good draw.
Milos Raonic: Seriously, who wants to play this guy in the 3rd round of Wimbledon? I don’t think there is a single player in the Top 8 seeds who want to get him, but one of them will. Massive serve, great ground strokes, acceptable net game, this guy has a lot of potential to do extremely well in the next few years in Wimbledon. Sure, he is still a bit raw and lacks the consistency to beat a top 4 player, but can we be sure that a player like Berdych or Roddick will beat on a potential 3rd round clash? Not really.
Dangerous unseeded players: Philipp Kohlschreiber, Lleyton Hewitt (if he plays), Ivo Karlovic, Philipp Petzschner, John Isner, Dudi Sela, Feliciano Lopez
The negative surprises
Gael Monfils:Sure he has a big serve and moves very well, however he never plays well in Wimbledon. Never went further than 3rd round and the way he was defeated by Kohlschreiber (an unseeded player in Wimbledon) in Halle puts him almost out of question for a place in the 2nd week of the tournament, even though he is the 9th seed.
Jurgen Melzer: Another high seeded player who is a main contender to bit the dust quite early in the tournament. Injuries have been plaguing him this season and he is out of form right now. A tough player in the early rounds and he will be gone.
Mikhail Youzhny: Another player who usually goes well in here, but no way he is going far this time. Lots of injury problems, lack of confidence on his game, lack of match practice, Youzhny is doomed to go out by the first decent opponent he faces.
Marin Cilic: Talk about someone who has taken a tumble on his level. If he struggled on hard and clay courts, he will fail big time on grass. Don’t even make me talk on his pathetic footwork on grass. Mario Ancic should teach him a lesson or two on this subject.
Ivan Ljubicic: Having one of the best serves in the circuit doesn’t automatically make you a good grass courter. Go look at Ljubicic’s results at Wimbledon even when he was 3rd in the rankings for further proof. Year after year, punters pick him to win his matches on grass because he was a big serve. This year won’t be an exception. And he will fail on grass again.
Seeded players with natural struggles on grass: Nicolas Almagro, Juan Ignacio Chela, Nikolay Davydenko, Thomaz Bellucci
Seeded players struggling to find form: Stanislas Wawrinka, Fernando Verdasco, Guillermo Garcia-Lopez
Players coming for a nice pay-check: Pablo Andujar, Filippo Volandri, Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo, Jaroslav Pospisil, Maximo Gonzalez, Pere Riba, Daniel Gimeno
Conclusions:
Don’t be surprised if the whole Top 4 is once again in the semi finals of a GS
Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer are the two real contenders for the title
A lot of seeded players may fall very early, depending on the draw
Wimbledon plays much slower than Queen’s, beware of baseliners
Depending on the draw, more than one non-seeded player may get into the 2nd week

#56 Re: Wimbledon 2011
evo i zenskog dijela:
The 2011 WTA season has been crazy. With both Williams sisters out, Clijsters out for a while and Wozniacki unable to prove why she is the #1 ranked player in the world, the Grand Slams have been up for grabs. A big number of players were already able to get big titles in 2011. Clijsters and Na Li won the Grand Slams. Wozniacki won Dubai and Indian Wells. Azarenka won Miami. Kvitova won Madrid and finally, Sharapova won Rome. That's six players winning the seven most important tournaments already played this season. A big sign of how nobody is currently able to dominate the circuit. And that's why Wimbledon will be another big tournament up for grabs, unless two returning sisters disagree on that...
The Contenders
Serena Williams: She has played two matches this season. And still she is the main contender for the title. History has shown that players returning from long-injuries or even retirements can win Grand Slams on WTA, so no reason why Serena can't do it, especially when very few people can handle her game on grass. I mean, she barely lost to world #3 Zvonareva and by the time she reaches the final stages of Wimbledon, she will have more rhythm and she should be playing much better than she played in Eastbourne, which will put her on a level where potentially only her sister can stop her on grass. With the lack of champions and mentally strong players in the circuit, who can really stop Serena from winning this tournament? Just her sister, really.
Venus Williams: After getting injured in the Australian Open, Venus returned in Eastbourne and in her first match back, she immediately defeats the world #11 and then absolutely destroys Ivanovic in the following round. Sure, her defeat against Hantuchova was quite bad and Venus is known for some massive defeats (Pironkova last year), but if she is playing at the level she showed against Ivanovic, only Serena can stop her, especially with Clijsters out of the tournament. The Williams sisters are just that good in Wimbledon. For some reason, they have won 9 of the last 11 editions of the tournament...
The Outsiders
Maria Sharapova: Some people say she's the main favourite. Really? We all remember how amazing she was when she won Wimbledon at 17, however she has collected some horrible results in the tournament over the last few years, in fact Wimbledon has been her worst Grand Slam in terms of results over the past years (4th round - 2nd round - 2nd round - 4th round since 2007). She surely made some improvements on her game which allowed her to win Rome and get to the semi finals of Roland Garros, however the way her serve absolutely disappeared against Na Li in the semis of RG must be a huge concern. She has a shot at the title, but she is beatable by most Top 10 players on a good day, besides her mental block against the Williams sisters (hasn't beat Serena since 2004 and Venus since 2007!). She's the main outsider for the title, yes. But she's not a favourite like the Williams sisters are.
Vera Zvonareva: The defending finalist of last year has surely a good shot of repeating that, especially if both Williams sisters stay on the other side of the draw. She was capable of beating Serena in Eastbourne, but I don't see her doing that again on a Grand Slam. However, if the Williams sisters struggle and if she has a good draw, be extremely careful with Zvonareva. She is more than likely to beat all the other top players on this surface and with her two Grand Slam finals, she happens to also be one of the most experienced players in the circuit at the later stages of a big tournament. She has the game for the surface and if the Williams sisters fail, she can easily take advantage of that and go all the way.
Na Li: After a final in the Australian Open and a title in Roland Garros, she is surely a very dangerous player in Wimbledon. Her flat shots will work like a charm on grass and her good movement will also help her. The big problem will be her desire of lack of it after winning a Grand Slam so recently. Roland Garros champions tend to underperform in Wimbledon, however she has stated that she is working very hard for Wimbledon as well, a surface which curiously suits her much better than clay, where she got her Grand Slam title. Serena may be too much for her to handle, but besides the American, nobody would really be a clear favourite over her in Wimbledon, as even Venus struggles big time with the Chinese player. If she has a nice draw and sees herself in the second week of the tournament, be extremely careful with her.
Petra Kvitova: If this girl gets in the zone, you better run. The Czech player is still very inconsistent, but when she gets confident on her game, nothing can stop her. Go watch her matches in Paris Indoors and Madrid for further proof. With one of the best serves in the circuit and huge ground strokes, either she destroys herself in the first rounds or she can even go all the way for a shocking Wimbledon title! We all watched what she was capable of doing last year in Wimbledon, when she reached semi finals, with a 6-2 6-0 win over #1 Wozniacki in the 4th round, so put your eye on this girl, as she may be making history on this tournament.
Viktoria Azarenka: The retirement-queen is also one of the most impressive players this season. She was the main contender to win Roland Garros, but she failed in the quarter finals at the hands of the eventual winner. She gets mentions to be an outsider at every Grand Slam, but she is yet to reach a Grand Slam semi final! However, she has to be mentioned as an outsider, because there isn't really a big number of players who will be favoured against her, probably 4 or 5. With a good draw, she may fly under the radar and be able to go very far in the tournament.
The second week contenders
Caroline Wozniacki: She is a second week contender, nothing more than that. Grass is her worst surface, as she can easily get overpowered by some top players and honestly, I don't see a reason why she should be favoured against any of the contenders or outsiders for this tournament. She never went further than 4th round in here and honestly, fourth round is probably the best she may get in here, unless she gets an extremely easy draw.
Agnieszka Radwanska: She is surely one of the most reliable players in the circuit and grass is probably her best surface. She played really well in Eastbourne, almost upsetting Kvitova, so she seems to be in good form. Unless she has a terrible draw (ex: facing Venus in the 3rd round), she will most likely be around in the second week of the tournament.
Sabine Lisicki: It seems like she has regained her form and she was surely impressive on her way to win the title in Birmingham, with no sets dropped. She's not seeded, so her draw will be very important to know what she will be capable of doing, but unless she gets a huge contender for the title very early, she will be around hitting some big winners in the later stages of the tournament.
Daniela Hantuchova: The Slovakian surely loves grass and she is very experienced at this level. With a final in Birmingham and still in contention for an Eastbourne title, she is proving that she will be ready to face Wimbledon at her best form. She is clearly the player the Top 8 wants to avoid the most in the 3rd round, as she is capable of upsetting almost all of them on a good day.
Marion Bartoli: Be very careful with the surprising Wimbledon finalist in 2007 and Roland Garros semi-finalist last month. She is in form and she knows how to use the grass in her favour better than almost everyone in the circuit. She is constantly underrated by everybody, but she is capable of pulling some shocking upsets and she very rarely loses to players with a lower ranking than her. She will likely fly under the radar for a 4th round / quarter final kind of performance.
The positive surprises
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova: She is surely having the best season on her career so far and she is a very dangerous player as well. She may not be as good on grass as she is on other surfaces, however she has enough firepower to blow away most of her opponents. Don't be surprised if she pulls an upset and ends up getting into the quarter finals or something like that.
Jarmila Gajdosova: Another player nobody wants to face on a fast surface. She is such a big hitter than most players can't handle her power and help up losing against her quite easily on fast surfaces. Radwanska barely defeated her in Eastbourne and Gajdosova surely made an impact last season by reaching fourth round on this very same tournament. With a good draw, she may go far once again.
Dangerous unseeded players: Sabine Lisicki (as noted previously), Maria Jose Martinez, Magdalena Rybarikova
The negative surprises
Samantha Stosur: She never went further than 3rd round in Wimbledon and the only time she got to 3rd round, she had to save multiple match points in the previous round. Her major weapons (serve & forehand) are ineffective on grass and her movement is also easily exposed. Once she faces a decent opponent, she will be out of the tournament.
Jelena Jankovic: She seems to be lacking confidence and motivation to continue play at her best level. She's out of the Top 10 for the first time in years and now on her worst surface, I just don't see her doing well in this tournament at all. The movement is not as good as before, the forehand is horrible and even the backhand has seen better days. A decent opponent on the other side of the court and she's out.
Ana Ivanovic: She simply doesn't know what to do anymore. She fired another coach, but it's not the coach who's to blame if she lacks mental strength to win a single 3-set match. Nowadays, once her opponent wins a set, it's over for Ivanovic, as she can't play well at all on the third and decisive set. She has lost in the 1st round in 3 of the last 4 Grand Slams and don't be surprised if this happens again, especially with her grass being by far her worst surface.
Svetlana Kuznetsova: Another one who doesn't know what to do with her talent. She seems to be once again struggling big time, even with a quarter final in Roland Garros. Grass is her worst surface, so once she faces a decent player, she will be most likely knocked out of the tournament.
Seeded players with natural struggles on grass: Flavia Pennetta, Shahar Peer, Dominika Cibulkova, Maria Kirilenko
Seeded players struggling to find form: Yanina Wickmayer, Kaia Kanepi, Tsvetana Pironkova
Conclusions:
Even with long lay-offs, the Williams sisters are the real contenders for the title.
A lot of players have a good chance to go far in the tournament.
Serena and Venus with low seeds mean some outsiders will have cake walks, some with have nightmare draws.
Big chance the draw may be highly unbalanced. Let's hope not.

Set nije izgubio ni u Marseju i Sinsinatiju iste godine, ako ni u Rimu i Torontu 2010.

Set nije izgubio ni u Marseju i Sinsinatiju iste godine, ako ni u Rimu i Torontu 2010.

I to kako...
