TRACE 2008 Essay Contest
The topic for the TRACE Essay Contest in 2008 is:

"What Works?"

TRACE would like your thoughts on what personal behaviors, what laws or policies, what deterrents or incentives, what reporting devices or transparency mechanisms, what educational campaigns, what measures of any kind have been or could be effective in resisting or curtailing bribery?

The judges are interested in hearing a wide variety of voices including private persons who have dealt with bribery, corporate or government officials, scholars, lawyers, journalists and others. Successful essays may address any or all of the points above. Writers may speak from experience or from research, or from a combination of the two. The judges are equally interested in anecdotes and in data. They admire the simple and direct writing style they find in The Economist or in Foreign Policy magazine.

Eligibility: The TRACE 2008 essay contest is open to all, with the exception of TRACE employees and their immediate families.

Submission Guidelines: Entries must not exceed 2,500 words and must be original, unpublished work. A brief synopsis not to exceed 150 words should precede the essay, and each submission should include the full name, e-mail address and phone number of all authors. Essays must be written in English.

How to Enter: On or before May 31, 2008, e-mail your essay, the brief synopsis, and all necessary author information to [email protected].
Essays may be sent as attachments, but should also be pasted directly into the body of the e-mail.

Submission Deadline: The deadline for this contest is 11:59 p.m., EDT, May 31, 2008.

Prizes: 1st Place – $10,000 USD, 2nd Place – $5,000 USD, Honorable Mention - $500 USD

Winner Notification: Winners will be notified by telephone and/or e-mail. Winning authors will be asked to provide a brief biography (200 words or less), a current address and appropriate banking information, and a completed U.S. tax form W-9 or W-8BEN. If a winning essay is authored by more than one person, the prize money will be divided evenly between all authors. U.S. taxes will be withheld, if required. TRACE must also receive a signed release form from each winning author. A copy of this release form is available here for your review. Winning authors that do not respond to telephone/e-mail notification and/or have not supplied the above information within 30 days of notification will be disqualified.

Essay winners will be announced and prizes awarded by September 1, 2008. A collection of the winning essays will be published on the TRACE website.
