Kosovo Mountain, Mountaineering, Skiing and Rural Tourism

Kosovo

Geographical Position

Kosovo is located in the heart of South East Europe. Kosovo is situated between the 42° and 44° parallels of northern hemisphere and between the 20° and 22° meridians.

Positioned in the centre of the Balkan Peninsula, it presents an important junction of the Median and Southern Europe, and the Adriatic and Black Sea. Kosovo's area is 10,908 km2 and is populated by over 2 million people.

The main axis of the junction of northern and southern Balkan regions is comprised of the Ibër, Sitnica and Lepenc river valleys. This axis divides several roundabout valleys: near Mitrovica along the Ibër river passes the Adriatic highway which connects the Montenegrin coast, near Besiana (Podujeva) town; the Llapi and Toplica roads connect Kosovo with the Serbian city of Nish and with the interior part of Balkan Peninsula; nearby is the city of Prishtina and the Drenica valley which connects Drini i Bardhë (White Drini) with the shortest way to the Albanian coast. In the city of Ferizaj , the Morava e Binçës pathway is divided, which is then connected to the main river axes of the Morava and Vardar Rivers .

Climate

Climate and temperatures in Kosovo are variable during the four seasons of the year. Winter is with snow and low temperatures, and in Prishtina, Kosovo's Capital, the average temperature goes down to - 2°C. Spring and autumn are cool and with seasonal rainfalls, whereas summer is hot and dry (rainless), with an average temperature of +22°C. In Kosovo, average high temperatures during the year range between +25°C and +38°C.

Flora and Fauna

Climate, pedological (soil) and hydrographical (water) variations have influenced Kosovo's diverse world of plants and animals.

Flora
In the transitive zone from the field in the hillock regions you will see acacias (fruit trees), then the white mulberry, black mulberry, black oak, plane trees, Canadian poplar trees, Japanese robins, bays, and American ash-trees.

In hillock regions the most widespread of the deciduous (lose their leaves) trees are the beech trees, and with an increase in altitude (900 – 1500 m) we begin to find the trees that hold their leaves: red fir, fir, black pine, and white pine. Chestnut trees, like a pointer of Mediterranean climate, continue through the Bjeshkëve të Nemuna mountains till Strellci i Epërm village and on to Peja (in Zatra). At an altitude of around 1,500m the mountain pastures begin and continue up to 2,200m, and in many pastures you can find bilberries, a plant that yields very healthy fruit.

Fauna

The hilly-mountain zone is much richer with fauna. In the field and hilly zone of the forests (such as Lipovica, Kleçka, etc.) you will find boar, deer and rabbit. Among the wildfowl that live in the field-hilly zone are the fulvous raven (corbie), magpie, starling, field sparrow, pecker, pigeon, turtledove, field partridge, quail, pheasant etc. The fulvous (brown) bear, chamois, boar, wolf, fox, roe, big and small wild hen, forest hen, grouse, squirrel, etc are found in the mountain zone. Bears are more prevalent in the mountain zone of the Albanian Alps, in Sharr, Moknë etc. For tourist hunting the forests of Lipovica (Blinaja) and Kleçka (not far from Lipjan) are most suitable. Regarding water fauna you can fish: salmon trout, dispar fish, eel, catfish, carp, scubas, torpedo, small herring, gudgeon (carp family), to name some. .

List of mountains in Kosovo: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mo ... _in_Kosovo

The mountains surrounding Peja are part of the Cursed Mountains or Albanian Alps, which are placed in three countries, Kosovo, Montenegro and Albania. The highest peak in Kosovo Gjeravica 2656 m and the highest peak in Peja municipality are, Mariashi 2530m, Guri Kuq 2522, Hajla 2400.

The part of the Mountain in Peja region starts at the outskirts of the town. The river Lumbardhi during thousand of years created the canyon of Rugova one of the most striking views in Kosovo.

The region is poorly inhabited, due to the migration of people, however the thirteen villages of Rugova are still alive and are mainly used by elderly people and as vacation for the families of people coming from this region.

The mountains are home of climbing routes, several glacial lakes, the river Lumbardhi and one of the biggest caves in Balkans Great Canyon which is also one of the least explored link.

In some of the villages there are also huts and small motels available for rent.

Image

How to get there

Best way to get to Kosovo is through Prishtina Airport which has good links especially with Vienna and Switzerland due to a big number of Kosovo Albanian Diaspora living there.

The airport is some 15 kilometres away from the capital Prishtina. From Prishtina to come to Peja one can take a bus (4-5 euros) or a taxi 40-50 euros. If the car is available one can drive to the town 90 kilometres 1:30 hrs drive.

Once in Peja access to the mountains is very easy. One can take a quick taxi or walk in a narrow asphalt road for three to five kilometres and you are then in the middle of the gorge.

In order to have a hiking or a climbing trip one needs a guide which can be offered by the Marimangat e Pejes club.

Food

The food in Kosovo is based on red meet and bakery. Peja is known in Kosovo for its best Qebaps which you can order in any of the local Qebatore. However the mountainous food is a bit different as the main dishes are base on Derry products and corn.

Some of the traditional foods to be tried are Gjize me speca (dzees me spetza) and Maze e Zime (maaz e zeeme).

Most of these foods are highly caloric and are recommended only when loosing a lot of energy.

However the town offers a wide range of pizzerias and sandwich bars.

Kanjon Rugova - Rugovska klisura
25 km dug kanjon Rugove, duž toka reke Pećke Bistrice, preko prevoja Čakora, u blizini granice sa Crnom Gorom, predstavlja najbolji put do Jadranskog mora.

Područje Rugovske Klisure, koje još uvek nije dovoljno istraženo, karakterišu mnogobrojni planinski vrhovi nadmorske visine preko 2000 metara, kanjoni i planinski klanci, bogatstvo planinske vegetacije, četinarske šume i pašnjaci. Sume netaknute prirode Rugovske klisure obiluju vocem, orhidejama i leptirima.

Kako teritorija severog planinskog venca planine Hajle pripada regionu Rožaja u Crnoj Gori i širem području Raške/Sandzaka, juzni obronci planine Hajle na Kosovu i Metohiji pripadaju regionu Rugove.

Šar planina se proteže izmedju južnog dela kosovskog basena, planina Crnoljeve i Crne Gore (Skopska Crna Gora i Karadag Kumanovo-Preševo), Tetova (Gornji Polog i Donji Polog) i kosovsko-prizrenskog basena, planine Korab /2764 metara/, Koritnika i regiona Ljume u severistočnoj Albaniji. Šar planina čini početak posebnog masiva Dinarskih Alpa, poznatih kao Sarsko-Pindski planinski sistem. Nakon detaljnih istraživanja i valorizacije područja Šar planine, stručnjaci predlažu proširenje granica Nacionalnog Parka Šara na oko 70000 ha, ovog jedinstvenog centralnobalkanskog masiva na Kosovu i Makedoniji.

Glavni greben planine Šare, dug 95 km, sadrži visoke površine i bočne grebene, raščlanjene brojnim divljim vodotocima. Šar planina obuhvata preko 100 vrhova visine iznad 2000 metara, od čega 30 vrhova prelazi 2500 metara. Najviši vrh Peskovi, visok 2651 metara je odličan primer kraškog planinskog reljefa. Nacionalni Park Šaru odlikuju izvanredne prirodne lepote i preko 200 vrsta ptica, medju kojima su orao bradan, sivi sup, sivi orao i jarebica.

Geološka, morfološka i klimatska raznovrsnost Šar planine, vodom najbogatije balkanske planine, čiji potoci otiču u tri morska sliva, uticala je i na neprocenjivo bogatstvo njenog biljnog i životinjskog sveta (oko 2000 vrsta vaskularne flore i brojni tercijarni relikti i endemorelikti, preko 200 vrsta ptica i 147 vrsta leptira).

Brezovicu odlikuju stoletne šume, raskošne livade i beskrajni pašnjaci bogati planinskim cvećem, lekovitim biljem i retkim vrstama divljači. Relativno visoke količine padavina i vododržljive stene uslovljavaju pojavu guste rečne mreže i bogatstvo izvora i površinskih voda.

@ trimi68,

Climate
Kosovo is located between the Mediterranean Sea and mountainous regions of Southeast Europe, on the Balkan Peninsula. This geographic location gives the country its large annual temperature range. Summer temperature highs can reach +30°C, winter's temperatures as low as -10°C[1]. According to the Strahler classification map The climate in Kosovo is considered moist continental[2]. The country experiences warm summers and cold and snowy winters.

Mountains and mountain ranges

See, List of mountains in Kosovo: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mo ... _in_Kosovo

Much of Kosovo's terrain is mountainous. The Šar Mountains are located in the south and south-east, bordering Macedonia. This is one of the region's most popular tourist and skiing resorts, with Brezovica and Prevalac as the main tourist centres. The region of Kosovo's mountainous area, including the highest peak Gjeravica, at 2656 m above sea level, is located in the south-west, bordering Albania.

The Kopaonik mountains are located in the north. The central region of Drenica, Crnoljeva and the eastern part of Kosovo, known as Goljak, are mainly hilly areas.

Bodies of water

Although Kosovo is landlocked, there are several notable rivers and lakes within its borders. The main rivers are the White Drin, running towards the Adriatic Sea, with the Erenik among its tributaries), the Sitnica, the South Morava in the Goljak area, and Ibar in the north. The main lakes are Gazivoda (380 million m³) in the north-western part, Radonjić (113 million m³) in the south-west part, Batlava (40 million m³) and Badovac (26 million m³) in the north-east part. Other smaller scenic lakes include Heart's Lake and Big Lake. Kosovo is also home to the following waterfalls:

* The 25 meter Drin Waterfall is located at the mouth of the White Drin River.[3]

* The Miruša Waterfalls are a series of falls on the Miruša River (a tributary of the Drin) in the municipality of Mališevo in western Kosovo, on the east side of the Metohija region.[4]

Rugova Valley and Canyon

One of Kosovo's most prominent geological features is the Rugova Canyon. The 6 km long canyon along the border with Montenegro was formed by the flow of the Mbushtria River. The canyon was declared a Protected National Monument in 1988, and will be included in a proposed Bjeshket e Nemuna/Prokletije National Park, approved by the Kosovo Parliament in 2003.[5]

Plains

There are two main plains in Kosovo. The Dukagjini basin is located in the western part of the Kosovo, and the Plain of Kosovo occupies the eastern part. Between the two basins there is low hills area of Drenica.

The plain of Kosovo is on average higher that the plain of Metohija for about 100 meters.

Average height of the plain of Kosovo is 550 meters and the average height of the plain of Dukagjini is 450 meters.

Gadime Cave

Gadime Cave is a cave composed of Paleozoic marble, located in the village of Donje Gadimje on the eastern side of the Kosovo Valley. The northern passage contains displays of aragonite speleothems in a variety of rare formations.[6]

Kanjon Rugova - Rugovska klisura
25 km dug kanjon Rugove, duž toka reke Pećke Bistrice, preko prevoja Čakora, u blizini granice sa Crnom Gorom, predstavlja najbolji put do Jadranskog mora.

Područje Rugovske Klisure, koje još uvek nije dovoljno istraženo, karakterišu mnogobrojni planinski vrhovi nadmorske visine preko 2000 metara, kanjoni i planinski klanci, bogatstvo planinske vegetacije, četinarske šume i pašnjaci. Sume netaknute prirode Rugovske klisure obiluju vocem, orhidejama i leptirima.

Kako teritorija severog planinskog venca planine Hajle pripada regionu Rožaja u Crnoj Gori i širem području Raške/Sandzaka, juzni obronci planine Hajle na Kosovu i Metohiji pripadaju regionu Rugove.

Big companies interested in Kosovo ski resort

Prishtina, 27 September 2007 - After the approval of the UN Legal Office in New York, the Kosovo Trust Agency (KTA) is preparing the privatisation of Brezovica ski resort. “The bid will be announced by using the special spin-off method and the opening of offers will be in the beginning of next year,” stated Ekrem Tahiri, KTA spokesman. According to him, the price will be determined by the market. The assets of the complex will all be in one tender and include the skiing center, three hotels and two restaurants. “We hope that some of five big groups that are interested will be part of the competition for the complex,” said Tahiri.
